Championship Outrights Betting

Often described as the most exciting league in the world, the English Championship is a place where anything can happen. This makes outright betting markets super exciting and extremely popular among football bettors.

Read on as we look ahead to your outright betting options for the 2025/26 Championship season at talkSPORT BET.

What is Outright Betting?

An outright bet is when you place a football wager on the overall winner of a competition or the person or team to achieve something by the end of the season.

In the Championship context, an example of an outright market is a bet on the team you think will win the league or a wager on the player you think will finish the season as the top goalscorer.

You can place outright wagers at any time, but it often makes sense to bet at the start of the season when you can access the best odds. When the season begins, the favourites and front-runners will see their odds shorten significantly, meaning you will miss out on the value.

If you’re excited about the 2025/26 Championship season, explore some of the outright wagers you can place as 24 teams vie for a place in the English Premier League:

League Winner

The most popular outright market among Championship bettors is the league winner. Simply place a bet on the team you think will finish the season at the top of the pile and sit back and watch the season unfold.

Ipswich Town are favourites to win the 2025/26 Championship following their relegation from the Premier League at the end of last season. Their talented manager, Kieran McKenna, will have to plan for life without Liam Delap, who left the club for Chelsea, and they will need to recruit well this season to mount a title challenge.

Behind Ipswich in the stakes are Southampton, who will look for an immediate return to the Premier League under their new Belgian head coach, Will Still. Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United are outside bets after losing the 2024/25 playoff final, while newly promoted Birmingham City, under ambitious American ownership, are attractively priced to win the Championship this season.

Promotion

If you can’t pick an outright winner, backing a team to get promoted from the Championship is the next best thing. There are two methods of promotion from the Championship: automatic and playoffs. The top two teams at the end of the season gain automatic promotion, while the teams occupying positions three, four, five, and six compete in the post-season playoffs.

Ipswich Town are favourites to win promotion this season, with Southampton, Sheffield United, and Birmingham City the other fancied sides.

Wrexham look good value, as they look to write a new chapter of their Hollywood story. Though there will be much upheaval at the King Power Stadium this summer and beyond, Leicester City are also attractively priced to gain promotion at the end of the 2025/26 season.

Top 2 Finish

Sticking with the outright promotion markets, you can also bet on the teams you think will finish in the Championship’s top two, thus securing automatic promotion to the Premier League. This market offers better value than the promotion market, as it doesn’t include the teams promoted via the playoffs.

Top 6 Finish

We also love the excitement of the Championship top six outright market. The race for the playoffs in the Championship is often more exciting than the competition for the top two places, given that practically any team in the league has a pre-season shot of making it into one of the playoff berths.

Rather than backing Ipswich, Southampton, or Sheffield United at short odds, you can look further down the pyramid for better value. For instance, recently promoted Wrexham look more than capable of continuing last season’s form in the Championship, while West Bromwich Albion and Norwich City may also have a new say under new management.

Top Half Finish

You can cast your net even wider and bet on teams you think will finish in the top half of the Championship table. Again, this is an attractive market for unfancied teams and is a viable option if you sense that an underdog is about to have a brilliant season.

You can also find reasonable value among the classic mid-table Championship teams, with Preston North End, Swansea City, and Bristol City all offering good value. You might fancy an accumulator bet on several teams to push on this season and secure a top-half Championship finish.

Bottom 3 Finish

The Championship produces excitement at both ends of the table, and as last season proved with Cardiff City’s demise, big clubs can slip into English football’s third tier on the season's final day.

You can bet on any team to be relegated into League One at any stage of the Championship season, but be sure to monitor form, injuries, and transfer activity before making your selections.

Top Goalscorer

One of our favourite markets is the Championship top goalscorer. New signings can make a name for themselves in English football’s second tier, while former England internationals and exciting youth talents can all be in with a shout of scoring 20+ goals to fire their team to glory.

Joel Piroe of Leeds United ended last season as the Championship top scorer, and he will be plying his trade in the Premier League with the Yorkshire side.

With much movement still likely among Championship clubs, Borja Sainz at Norwich City, Jay Stansfield at Birmingham City, Adam Armstrong at Southampton, and George Hirst at Ipswich Town could be in the conversation.
