Kauto Star is the most successful horse in the race's history, winning five times between 2006 and 2011 under Ruby Walsh, who is the only jockey to have won the race five times. Paul Nicholls is the most successful trainer with seven King George victories, including all five of Kauto Star's wins, plus See More Business (1997, 1999), Silviniaco Conti (2013, 2014), Clan Des Obeaux (2018, 2019), Frodon (2020) and Bravemansgame (2022). Desert Orchid is the second most successful horse with four wins between 1986 and 1990.

The reigning King George VI Chase champion is The Jukebox Man, who won the 2025 renewal under jockey Ben Jones for trainer Ben Pauling. The seven-year-old, who runs in the colours of former Premier League football manager Harry Redknapp, won at 7-1 odds in a thrilling finish at Kempton Park on 26 December 2025.
