Not to be confused with the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Royal Ascot, the King George VI Chase is an annual Boxing Day horse race of great prestige.
First held in 1937, it’s a Grade 1 steeplechase at Kempton Park, run on Boxing Day as part of Kempton Park’s Christmas Festival.
It’s a challenging, three-mile track with eighteen fences and offers a purse of around £260,000, with the winner claiming £148,098.
Kauto Star is the most successful horse in the race’s history, winning five times between 2006 and 2011 under Ruby Walsh, who is the only jockey to have won the race five times.
