If the first few games have already passed, you have not necessarily missed your chance. That is exactly when the in-play markets begin.

Live prices follow the score. They also take account of the server, the match format and how much work a player still has to do. If the favourite loses the first set, their odds will usually drift. How far? That depends on whether they were outplayed, how many sets remain and what the market expected before the match.

You will notice markets closing during rallies. They normally reopen once the point is over and the umpire has called the new score. That next price may be different from the one shown a few seconds earlier.

Before pressing the button, stop and read the slip again. Tennis odds move fast; the price you clicked may no longer be the price in front of you.

Match Winner

Forget the individual sets and call the eventual winner. A lead helps, of course, but two hours of tennis may still be left.

Set Winner

This narrows the bet to one set. It may cover the set currently being played or the next one, so read the heading rather than assuming.

Game Winner

Pick the player who will win a particular game. A server beginning at 0-0 is in a different position from one facing 15-40, which is why the price can change after every point.

Next Point

Some fixtures allow you to back the winner of the next point. The market only has a short window between rallies and who is serving will matter enormously.

Total Games

Here, the final winner is beside the point. You are backing the match or set to contain more or fewer games than the listed number. Tie-breaks and close sets tend to push the total up. A quick straight-sets result does not.

Handicap Betting

A games handicap gives one player a head start on the adjusted score. Back someone at +3.5 games and that amount is added to their total when the bet is settled. A player at -3.5 needs to finish at least four games ahead.

Set handicaps work on the same basic idea but use sets rather than individual games.

Correct Set Score

Pick the final score in sets. First check whether the match is best of three or best of five. For bets placed before the players come out, use the main tennis betting page.

First question: who is serving well? At 3-3, the scoreboard looks even. Yet one player might be holding to love while the other survives deuce every time. The score alone misses that.

Breaks also mean more near the end of a set. Losing serve at 1-1 hurts. Losing it at 5-4 can end the set before there is any chance to reply.

Then watch the movement. Medical treatment, shorter rallies or a player stretching between points may suggest a physical problem. Do not jump too quickly, though. Tennis players show frustration for all sorts of reasons and poor body language is not proof of an injury.

Do not ignore the court beneath them. Grass tends to reward the serve. Clay gives the receiver longer. Hard court is the broad middle ground, although one venue can play much quicker than another.

Count the sets still needed. A player trailing in a five-set match has more road left than someone one set down in a best-of-three contest. Then glance at the conditions. Wind interferes with the toss, heat drains energy and rain may send everyone off court.

January belongs to Melbourne and the Australian Open. A few months later, the rallies get longer on the clay at the French Open.
