What to Know About The US Open

Before betting on the US Open at talkSPORT BET, familiarise yourself with the crucial information about this tournament so you know what to expect:

History, Facts and the Competition

The US Open was first contested in 1881 and since then there have been 143 editions of the tournament. Since 1978, it has been held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre in Flushing Meadows, New York.

The tournament is played on hard courts and if a player wins the three Grand Slam events prior to this one, they go into the competition seeking to complete the Calendar Grand Slam. In 1962, Rod Laver became the first male player since Don Budge in 1938 to win all four majors in the same year. This feat hasn’t been repeated since.

Betting on Hard Courts in Tennis

Like the Australian Open earlier in the year, the US Open is played on hard courts. Most of the tournaments on the ATP and WTA Tours are played on hard courts, so the players are very familiar with them.

Big servers tend to perform well on hard courts, as they can use the fast pace they generate to pick up a lot of aces on the surface. It’s also worth looking at the players who performed in the Australian Open when preparing your US Open strategy, as the same players often do well in both tournaments.

Past Winners

Bill Tilden, William Larned and Richard Sears all won the men’s US Open seven times in the Amateur Era of the tournament. In the Open Era, Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras and Roger Federer hold the record for the most titles with five wins each.

There have now been five different winners of the men’s tournament in the last six years, with Carlos Alcaraz (2025 & 2022), Jannik Sinner (2024), Novak Djokovic (2023 & 2018), Daniil Medvedev (2021), and Dominic Thiem (2020) all prevailing. In the women’s tournament, Molla Bjurstedt Mallory prevailed eight times in the Amateur Era, while in the Open Era, Chris Evert and Serena Williams both lifted the trophy six times. World number one Aryna Sabalenka became the latest women’s US Open winner in 2025, successfully defending her title by defeating Amanda Anisimova in the final.

US Open Favourites

Carlos Alcaraz, the newly crowned US Open champion, entered the tournament as one of the top contenders and lived up to expectations by clinching his second title in New York. The Spaniard had a strong season, reaching the semifinals at Wimbledon and the French Open, and winning titles in Madrid and Cincinnati. His triumph at Flushing Meadows confirms his status as one of the sport’s elite, and his odds reflected that heading into the tournament.

In the women’s tournament, defending champion Aryna Sabalenka entered as the second favourite in the odds. Despite retaining her world number one ranking, she had a mixed Grand Slam season, falling short in the Wimbledon semi-finals and finishing runner-up at Roland Garros. Her run to the final in New York reaffirmed her consistency, though she was ultimately defeated by Amanda Anisimova.

Iga Swiatek, fresh from her first Wimbledon win, entered the 2025 US Open as the favourite. The six-time Grand Slam champion and world number two was widely expected to challenge for the title at Flushing Meadows, but her campaign ended in the quarterfinals, falling short of expectations.
