Place a bet on the Grand National

The Grand National is the most famous steeplechase in the world. It is a marathon contest held annually in April, run over a distance of 4 miles and 2½ furlongs. Watched by millions on television every year, it is the ultimate test of stamina.

In what is a thrilling spectacle, a maximum field of 34 runners jump fences that are bigger than on a standard National Hunt course. The iconic Grand National fences make this race one of the most unique on the National Hunt calendar.

Grand National odds are available right now at talkSPORT BET. The final field of 34 runners is declared 48 hours before the race, while the official handicapper reveals the weights in February.

What are Grand National Betting Markets?

Here is a look at the Grand National Betting Markets available at talkSPORT BET and the options you have when it comes to placing Grand National bets:

Grand National 2026 – Ante Post Market

The Grand National 2026 outright market offers you the opportunity to bet on who you think will win the race. It is available today, and you can bet on it until 10 am the day before the contest.

The usual ante-post rules will apply to this market, so if your runner does not line up in the contest, you lose your stake.

Each-Way Betting

You can place an each-way bet in the Grand National outright market. Your horse will need to finish in the first four horses to pick up a return. If your horse is placed, you will be paid out at 1/4 of the Grand National betting odds

Each-way betting is very popular on the Grand National, as there are 34 runners in the field. You can calculate the potential winnings by using our handy each-way bet calculator.

Race-Day Betting

Unlike the ante-post market, if your horse does not run when you place a bet on the day of the race, your stake will be refunded.

When you place your bet in the race day market, you have the choice of taking the Grand National odds at the time or selecting the starting price (SP).

Grand National Recent Winners

Below are details of the horses to have won the most recent Grand Nationals at Aintree, if you want to back a previous winner to win this famous race:

2025: Nick Rockett

  • Jockey: Patrick Mullins
  • Trainer: Willie Mullins
  • Owner: Stewart & Sadie Andrew

Willie Mullins made it back-to-back Grand National wins in 2025 thanks to Nick Rockett’s surprise victory at Aintree. With a starting price of 33/1, he flew under the radar and finished ahead of the 2024 winner and 7/1 shot I Am Maximus in another thrilling race.

With Grangeclare West finishing third behind I Am Maximus, Willie Mullins achieved a clean sweep of the top three places.

2024: I Am Maximus

  • Jockey: Paul Townend
  • Trainer: Willie Mullins
  • Owner: JP McManus

Willie Mullins secured his first Grand National win since 2005 when I am Maximus rode to victory under Paul Townend. He set off as the 7-1 joint-favourite to become only the fifth starting favourite to win the National this century.

The 2024 National finished 1-2-3-4 for Irish stables, with Delta Work, Minella Indo, and Galvin rounding the top four. The other 7-1 joint-favourite, Limerick Lace under Mark Walsh, finished tenth.

2023: Corach Rambler

  • Jockey: Derek Fox
  • Trainer: Lucinda Russell
  • Owner: The Ramblers

Many backed Corach Rambler to win again in 2024, as he won the 175th renewal of the Grand National in 2023. He completed an impressive double, as the Scottish-trained horse won the Cheltenham Festival a month earlier in the Ultima Handicap Chase. There was strong confidence behind the Aintree winner, who went off at 15/2 for the race, but he was unseated and didn’t finish the race. Lucinda Russell retired Corach Rambler later in 2024.

2022: Noble Yeats

  • Jockey: Sam Waley-Cohen
  • Trainer: Emmet Mullins
  • Owner: Robert Waley-Cohen

In 2022, Noble Yeats became the first seven-year-old horse since 1940 to come out on top in the famous steeplechase. He was ridden to victory by Sam Waley-Cohen, an amateur jockey who was having his final ride in the saddle before retiring. It was the first time an amateur rider had won the race since Marcus Armytage managed that feat in 1990 onboard Mr Frisk.

2021: Minella Times

  • Jockey: Rachael Blackmore
  • Trainer: Henry de Bromhead
  • Owner: JP McManus

History was made in the 2021 Grand National as Rachael Blackmore became the first female jockey to win the race when she partnered Minella Times to victory. The Irish-based horse, trained by Henry De Bromhead, finished just ahead of his stablemate Balko Des Flos in what was a 1-2 for the trainer.

2019: Tiger Roll

  • Jockey: Davy Russell
  • Trainer: Gordon Elliott
  • Owner: Gigginstown House Stud

Aboard Tiger Roll, Davy Russell became the first jockey since Brian Fletcher on Red Rum (1973 & 1974) to win back-to-back Grand Nationals on the same horse. He set off as the 4-1 favourite and finished three lengths ahead of the 66-1 shot Magic of Light to write his name into the history books.

Confirmed Weights for the 2026 Grand National

The Grand National is a handicap race, which attempts to level the playing field from the start. In a handicap race, horses carry different weights in their saddles, based on their past performances.

The faster, more successful horses carry heavier weights, while the less experienced ones carry lighter loads. The goal is to give every horse an equal chance of winning.

We now know that I Am Maximus will once again be carrying the heaviest weight going into the 2026 Grand National. Last year’s winner, Nick Rockett, and Banbridge, will be just one pound lighter at the starting gate.
