The teams that finish in the top eight of the league table will automatically progress to the knockout phases. The teams that finish between ninth and 24th in the table will compete in a two-legged knockout tie for the chance to progress.  

All teams that finish 25th and lower will be eliminated from the competition, with no drop down into the Europa League as was previously the case.  

The final 16 then sees the remaining teams play two-legged knockout ties until the final match.

Real Madrid

Barcelona

Although they played the 2024/25 season away from their Camp Nou home, Barcelona were imperious under Hansi Flick, winning La Liga, the Copa Del Rey, and the Supercopa de España.

They also made it to the Champions League semi-finals, losing over two legs to a dogged Inter team who out-fought that Catalan giants.
