The choices are plentiful when it comes to NBA betting markets. Some involve choosing a team, while others are more geared towards betting on individual players. Some of the most popular markets are:
Money Line Betting
Money line betting means choosing one NBA team to beat another in an outright fashion. This is the most traditional style of betting there is, and is as simple as it sounds.
For example, betting on the New York Knicks to defeat the Brooklyn Nets.
Handicap Betting
2-Way Handicap betting is a variation of money line betting with a twist. Essentially, you're choosing a team to either win or lose by a certain number of points.
For example, say the Atlanta Hawks are -9.5 favourites on the spread against the Toronto Raptors. Betting on the Hawks to 'cover the spread' (a common betting term used to describe winning a spread bet) means banking on them to not only win, but to win by 10 points or more.
Conversely, a bet on the Raptors to cover the spread means Toronto simply has to lose by less than 10 points, or win outright. This gives the underdog a bit more of an odds advantage compared to money line betting.
Totals (Over/Under) Betting
Totals (over/under) betting usually concerns the final score, meaning a bet on the final sum of the score being over or under the projected total.
For example, the Detroit Pistons and the Orlando Magic have a projected total of 249.5 points. A bet on the over needs the sum of the final score to exceed 250 points, whereas an under bet requires 249 points or less to cash.
Outrights Betting
Outrights betting refers to betting on any type of future NBA event. This includes team awards, player awards, and other future events of this nature.
For example, betting on the Warriors to win the NBA championship or on Steph Curry to win league MVP.
Prop Betting
Prop bets are usually placed on events or statistics concerning individual players. They can also be associated with certain in-game events that don't necessarily include the final score.
For example, betting on Klay Thompson to score over 35.5 points in a game, or on the over/under total of a specific quarter or half.
NBA Live Betting
Live Betting just means betting on any game that has already started. This is a relatively new concept, as placing bets after a game began has not been allowed for most of sports betting history.
Luckily, live betting extends to many of the traditional NBA betting markets. For example, betting on an underdog to beat a favourite after a strong first-quarter showing.
