The Open Championship (British Open) Betting Odds

While the Open Championship (sometimes referred to by fans and punters as the British Open) may be the fourth golf major of the season from a chronological perspective, it’s the oldest and longest-standing tournament of its type in the sport.

In fact, the Open Championship was inaugurated way back in 1860, and it remains open to the sport’s highest-ranked professionals and amateurs from across the globe.

Each year, we see the top-ranked amateurs compete against the world’s best players on the toughest courses that the British Isles have to offer.

Explore your Open Championship betting options and discover how to bet on this golf major today at talkSPORT BET.

History of The Open Championship

The Open Championship is the oldest and most prestigious golf tournament in the world. Its first edition was held in 1860 at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland, where it was an annual affair, attracting the most prominent golfers of the time.

Later, the tournament was played at a rotation of coastal venues across the United Kingdom. The tournament is organised by the R&A.

Along with the Masters Tournament, the PGA Championship, and the US Open, The Open is one of four major men's golf tournaments held annually. Since it is held in mid-July, The Open is chronologically the last major tournament of the season.

Open Qualifying, Format, & Structure

Players can qualify for this tournament through the Open Qualifying Series (OQS), local qualifying, or via an exemption. If the field size has not yet reached 156, top-ranked golfers who have not already qualified are eligible to play in the tournament.

In addition to local qualifying, players who meet certain criteria are given direct entry into the final qualifying. Some of these criteria include:

  • Past champions of The Open, the Masters, the US Open and the PGA Championship.
  • Players who played in the last edition of The Open.
  • Players with an official world golf ranking of 1000 or higher.
  • A player who is the current Boys Amateur champion.
  • Players who are US amateur champions in the last six years.

The tournament is played across four days in the British summer, usually the third weekend in July. Fourteen golf courses in the UK have hosted the Open, and they’re all links courses by the coast.

The player with the lowest score after four rounds and 72 holes is crowned the Champion Golfer of the Year and receives the famous Claret Jug.

Betting Markets & Options for the Open Championship

Here are just some of the ways you can bet on the Open Championship this year:

Outright Winner

We’ll start with the outright betting market, which requires you to pick the eventual winner of the Open. The sheer number of competitors and contenders here enables you to unlock highly competitive odds, especially when you bet early and decisively.

The enduringly consistent Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are usually among the pre-tournament favourites, as are their colleagues atop the World Golf Rankings.

To Place in the Top 5 or 10

Top 5 or Top 10 betting markets let you wager on a golfer finishing anywhere within those positions. These markets reduce risk, offer shorter odds, and suit consistent players who regularly contend but don’t always convert wins.

Head-to-Head Matchups

You can also engage in head-to-head golf betting. This type of market will pit two or three players in direct competition against one another, and you’ll have to pick which one will prevail in a particular round or tournament.

For instance, you could bet on whether Shane Lowry or Rory McIlroy will finish this year’s Open Championship with a lower score.
