The Most Popular Betting Markets for the US Open Golf Championship

Wondering how best to attack the latest US Open golf odds at talkSPORT BET? Below, we’ve recommended some of the most popular US Open betting markets to get your teeth stuck into:

Ante-Post Betting

Our ante-post betting market is open if you fancy taking a futures bet on the 2026 US Open. If your selection doesn’t go on to take part in the event for one reason or another, your bet still stands, so it’s a risky option but a useful one for value-seekers.

Outright Winner

Once the confirmed entrants are announced for the 2026 US Open, you’ll have access to the outright winner market, where you can place bets on individual golfers to win or place in an each-way bet (e.g., top 5 or 10).

Top 5/10 Finish

If you consider yourself a risk-averse golf bettor, you might be interested in the Top 5 Finish and Top 10 Finish betting markets. These are self-explanatory.

You’ll back a golfer (or multiple golfers) to finish in the top five or ten on the board. This can still be an effective way of finding value in outsiders who may not win the US Open outright but are well in the shake-up during the final round.

To Make the Cut

Another option when backing big outsiders in golf majors like the US Open is to bet on them to make the cut. Do you believe they’re in good form and can impact the competition?

If so, you can back them to start well during the opening two rounds and make the cut for the final two. It could be a safer play than betting on them to finish in the top five or ten.

First Round Leader

If there’s a golfer who’s notorious for coming out of the blocks fast, or you think a player will adjust remarkably well to the type of course, you could bet on them to finish the first round at the top of the US Open leaderboard.

Exploring the History of the US Open Golf Championship

The US Open Golf Championship has stood the test of time as one of the most illustrious events in men’s professional golf, well and truly establishing itself as one of the four golf majors.

Its inception can be attributed to a mutual partnership between iconic figures in American golf, notably USGA president Theodore Havemeyer and leading golf course architect A.W. Tillinghast.

1895 was the year of the first US Open in Rhode Island at the Newport Country Club. It attracted a modest field of just ten golfers who entered to play for the first prize worth $150. Horace Rawlins etched his name into the annals of golfing history by emerging victorious.

Since then, the US Open has been a proving ground for some of the world’s top players, given that the event is usually staged at some of the most challenging golf courses on the planet. From Pebble Beach and Oakmont to legendary venues like Winged Foot and Pinehurst No. 2, the US Open is always a test of skill, stamina and resilience. It’s why the championship is known as the “Toughest Test in Golf”.

Over the years, the US Open has produced countless moments for the history books, from Bobby Jones and Ben Hogan to Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods; these iconic winners are a testament to the calibre of player required to win a US Open.

US Open Qualifying

Not all pros get automatic entry to the US Open. The USGA has a rigorous qualification process:

  • Amateurs must have a handicap index of 1.4 or lower to enter local qualifiers.
  • Those who pass the 18-hole local stage progress to the 36-hole final qualifiers.
  • Exemptions are granted across 24 categories, including:
    • Top 10 from the previous US Open
    • Past US Open champions (last 10 years)
    • Winners of the Masters, PGA, and Open Championships (previous 5 years)
    • Top 60 in the OWGR (3 weeks prior)
    • NCAA Division I Men’s Individual Champion
    • Korn Ferry Tour and Latin America Amateur standouts

In 2023, the USGA added four new exemption paths, expanding the field further. LIV Golf players remain eligible to qualify through rankings and performance criteria.

2026 US Open Golf Betting Tips

J.J. Spaun will tee it up at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton as the defending champion, following his victory at Oakmont in 2025.

It was the American’s first-ever major triumph and only his fourth professional win. He will do well to repeat his feat in New York in 2026, given that he came from way down the pecking order to triumph in PA.

But all eyes will be on three-time major winner and current world number one, Scottie Scheffler, as he competes for his first US Open title. Scheffler won the PGA at a canter in 2025 and is the one to watch in New York. His best US Open finish came in 2022, when he finished in second place to eventual winner Matt Fitzpatrick at the Country Club in MA.

The 2025 Masters winner, Rory McIlroy, will be determined to win his first US Open since 2011, when he triumphed at the Congressional Country Club at Bethesda, Maryland. The pressure is off Rory after he secured the Grand Slam in 2025, but he will be keen to add more majors to his roll in what remains of this season.

The last time the US Open was hosted at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, Brooks Koepka held on to win with a score of +1. England’s Tommy Fleetwood carded a remarkable seven-under-par on the final day to finish one behind Koepka in the standings, narrowly missing out on his first major championship.
