Ashes Betting Tips

Cricket is unique compared to other many sports in that there are so many external factors that can influence the outcome of a game. The first of which is the weather. Blue skies with minimal cloud cover are ideal for batting, whereas overcast conditions lend themselves to bowling. The importance of a home crowd also shouldn't be underestimated, and The Barmy Army will certainly be in full voice for the duration of the series, come rain or shine. History Of The Ashes

The Ashes is a test cricket series between the English and Australian national teams. The series gets its name from a satirical obituary published in The Sporting Times in 1882, which stated that English cricket was dead and its body would be cremated and taken to Australia.

This humorous take on the English side's loss would be cemented in history, as the 'ashes' that were referred to in the initial piece were associated with the 1882-83 test series played in Australia. The English captain Ivo Bligh would famously proclaim that his side would "regain those ashes" during the tour, prompting the English media to brand the tour as one to regain the Ashes.

This would spark a long and storied rivalry between the two cricketing nations. After England won two of the three tests, they presented a small urn filled with what was thought to be the ashes of a bail, humorously described as "the ashes of Australian cricket".

It's important to note that the urn has never been the official tournament trophy of the series since it was presented as a personal gift to the captain Ivo Bligh. Replicas of the urn are frequently displayed by winning teams as a symbolic gesture of triumph in the series. The original urn can be found at the MCC Museum at Lord's.

The Ashes Tournament Structure

Traditionally, the Ashes have featured five Test matches hosted by England and Australia in rotation, at least once every two years. If the series ends with a draw, the team that last won the edition retains the trophy.
