The St Leger brings the British Classic season to a close at Doncaster, combining a demanding stamina test with one of Flat racing’s longest traditions. First staged in 1776, the St Leger is the oldest of Britain’s five Classics. It is also the final leg of the traditional Triple Crown, following the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and the Epsom Derby. Nijinsky remains the last horse to win all three in the same season, completing the feat in 1970.

Highwayman’s victory in 2026 followed Scandinavia’s success a year earlier and ended Aidan O’Brien’s run of three consecutive St Leger wins from 2023 to 2025. O’Brien still has an exceptional modern record in the race, while Joseph O’Brien has now trained two winners in the period shown above.

The final field for the 2027 St Leger has not yet been declared. At this stage, it is too early to present a definitive runners-and-riders list, and doing so would risk treating possible targets as confirmed plans.
