The old Super 8 has been binned. Twenty countries will still start the tournament, but the next champion must come through five opening groups, a Super 10 and, for some teams, a new Eliminator.
It is a format built to punish a bad week. Three group games do not offer much time to recover from a batting collapse or a loose final over. An unfancied qualifier only needs one great night to throw the section into chaos.
Plenty remains undecided. Eight places are unfilled, nobody knows the groups and selectors will not choose their squads for some time. That means the early outright market will keep shifting. No price showing yet? Come back nearer the event.
The tournament will cross the Tasman, with matches divided between Australia and New Zealand. Which cities get them? We do not know yet. Dates, grounds and the fixture order are all still to come from the ICC.
A large Australian stadium can ask different questions from a smaller New Zealand ground. Boundary size, pace, bounce, wind and travel will enter the conversation once the schedule lands.
England lifted the trophy in Melbourne when Australia last staged the competition in 2022. For New Zealand, this is new territory. The country has not previously hosted the men’s edition.
Here is where 2028 becomes interesting. The 20 teams begin in five groups, rather than the four used in 2026. After that comes the Super 10. Two countries earn a direct route to the semi-finals, while four others are sent into the Eliminators.
Each group contains four countries and every team plays three times. First and second go through. Across all five sections, that creates 30 group-stage matches.
Lose the opener and game two already feels close to a knockout. Net run rate could decide a tight group too, rewarding a quick chase or heavy victory.
The ten survivors are divided into two groups of five. Four matches apiece decide the standings, with 20 games played in this phase.
Top spot is particularly valuable. Win a Super 10 group and the reward is immediate entry to the last four. Finish second or third and the title remains possible, although another hurdle waits.
Second in one Super 10 group faces third in the other, and vice versa. Both matches are straight knockouts. The winners fill the two remaining semi-final places alongside the group winners.
First place buys a rest. A side finishing second or third must survive one more opportunity for its campaign to unravel.
From the last four onwards, the formula is familiar. Win a semi-final and move into the final. Lose and go home. There is no second leg and no series in which to put a poor performance right.
Twelve countries already have their tickets. Results from 2026 and the relevant ICC rankings put the following sides into the field:
Eight chairs are still empty. The Global Qualifier will fill them, bringing together countries from the 2026 field and others emerging from regional events.
Calling those teams filler would be a mistake. A qualifier gets three opening games and needs only one fearless performance to make a favourite nervous.
Trying to name a squad now would be guesswork. Players will emerge, others will drop out of favour and the balance of several teams may look completely different by 2028. Still, the early T20 World Cup odds are likely to gather around a familiar group.
Start with India. Nobody else has won three titles, and nobody before them had successfully defended the men’s trophy. Victories in 2024 and 2026 put them alone at the top of the roll of honour.
Their player pool is absurdly deep. The harder question is which combination survives another two years of IPL and international cricket.
Home advantage puts Australia firmly in the picture. They know the grounds, travel and pace that local surfaces can offer. The 2021 champions are not searching for a breakthrough, although three opening matches give any host little room for error.
The Black Caps came within one match of the title in 2026. Conditions at home should feel familiar. The challenge is turning that comfort into a first men’s T20 World Cup title rather than another near miss.
Two England sides have lifted the cup, first in 2010 and again in 2022. The 2028 version may feature a newer generation trying to match them on both sides of the Tasman.
There are dangers beyond those four. Pakistan rarely arrive at a T20 World Cup without match-winners. West Indies possess a proud history in this format, South Africa have built greater tournament experience, and Afghanistan’s bowling makes them uncomfortable opponents. Sri Lanka should not be ignored either.
The outright usually leads the way when a tournament is distant. More options tend to arrive after the draw, then match and player markets build as individual fixtures approach. Availability will vary, so use the market titles shown on the site rather than assuming every selection below is open.
This is the main ante-post market. Pick the country you believe will lift the trophy, regardless of how it gets through the earlier rounds.
If each-way terms are offered, read them. The fraction paid and number of places can differ between events.
Once the draw is complete, there may be prices on a group winner or a team to qualify. The order could matter when everyone has only three fixtures.
Back either side to win a fixture. The confirmed XI, toss and conditions can move the price close to the start.
Tournament-long player markets ask who will finish with the most runs or wickets. A player reaching the knockouts has more time to build a total. Role matters too, with openers accessing the full innings and new-ball or death bowlers operating when wickets can arrive quickly.
For a single game, options may include top team batter, top bowler, player runs, player wickets and Player of the Match. Check the final line-ups before getting involved. A famous name on the bench cannot score runs for you.
Not every bet needs a winner. Team totals, powerplay runs, opening partnerships, most sixes and most fours can offer another view of the same game.

T20 can change before there is time to settle into your seat. A wicket, a dropped catch and a six might all arrive in the same over. In-play prices move with that story.
Live markets can cover the winner, innings score, next wicket, player runs or the coming over. They may be suspended during a delivery or review, and the price can change when they return.
Fractional odds tell you the potential profit relative to your stake. Suppose New Zealand are 7/2 to win a match. A winning £10 stake produces £35 profit. Add the stake coming back and the total return is £45.
A short price means the market sees that outcome as more likely. Nothing is guaranteed. Wickets do not care which badge is on the shirt, and odds-on favourites lose T20 matches all the time.
Squad news is the starting point, but roles matter. Who opens? Who bowls at the death? Does the XI contain enough spin for a tired surface or enough pace for a bouncy one?
Recent form needs context. Runs on a flat home pitch do not answer every question about facing high pace in Australia.
The toss can help when dew or a changing pitch makes one innings easier, but it should not become the entire argument.
Finally, study the route. Winning a Super 10 group removes an entire knockout match. Once the tournament begins, that advantage could make the standings almost as important as the names on the team sheet.

India batted first and smashed 255/5, a record score for the men’s final. Sanju Samson led the charge with 89 from 46 balls. Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan added rapid fifties of their own.
Early wickets wrecked New Zealand’s reply. The Black Caps made 159 in 19 overs and lost by 96 runs. Jasprit Bumrah’s 4/15 was another record, as nobody had previously taken four wickets in the men’s decider.
Samson’s tournament ended with 321 runs and the Player of the Tournament award. India left with even more: title number three, the first successful defence and the first men’s T20 World Cup won by a host.
That is quite a standard for the 2028 challengers to chase.
