Scottish Championship Odds & Betting Markets

The Scottish Championship is the second tier of football in Scotland, presenting the chance to climb into the coveted Scottish Premiership. As promotion and relegation are on the line, with playoffs for both, the league’s often very closely contested at both ends of the ten-team table.

With so much on the line, it doesn’t come as a surprise that Scottish Championship betting has become so popular. A staple of the football betting page, particularly when the playoffs come around, it’s a tremendously exciting competition. Keep reading to find out more about the Scot Championship and the betting opportunities it presents.

Scottish Championship

There are four professional tiers in Scottish football. At the very top, you can bet on the Scottish Premiership, followed by the second-tier league, the Scottish Championship, and then you can find Scottish League One odds and League Two markets. The Scottish Championship table features 10 teams with two potential relegation and promotion spots each.

Winning the Scottish Championship results in the team swapping with the bottom club of the Scottish Premiership table. The next three in the Championship table will enter the playoffs, with the winner facing the 11th-placed team in the league above. The winner of this game will play in the Premiership in the following season.

Relegation works in a similar way to promotion: the bottom of the table gets automatically relegated. The team that finishes ninth in the Championship will await the winner of the Scottish League One playoff. If the Championship team wins in this final playoff game, the club will remain in the second flight of Scottish football.

There are two halves to each season, with the Scottish Championship fixtures playing as two sets of home and away games between every team in the league. So, the two teams will face each other four times in one season. They may also meet again in the playoffs.

Scottish Championship Teams

As 40 per cent of the places in the Scottish Championship can feature a new team each season, it’s fair to say that there are a lot of turnovers. Since its founding in 2013, however, a couple of teams have seen lasting spells without promotion or relegation:

  • Greenock Morton: Residents of the Scottish Championship since the 2015/16 season, Morton is the current longest-serving team in the league and missed out on the playoffs in 2022/23 on goal difference.
  • Inverness Caledonian Thistle: Two years after Morton joined, Inverness CT came to the Championship and hasn’t budged since. They missed the playoffs in 2022/23 by two points.
  • Arbroath: Next season will be Arbroath’s fourth consecutive season in the Scottish second tier, but they only managed to avoid the relegation playoffs by three points in 2022/23.
