Major League Soccer Matchups & Betting

Major League Soccer (MLS) is North America’s top football league, with clubs from the United States and Canada. To European football fans, the league is unique, split into two conferences and with a postseason playoff competition to crown the champion.

Thanks to a recent bumper TV deal, the MLS has grown in popularity in the UK and across Europe, which has also been helped by the arrival of stars like Lionel Messi.

So, if you’re keen to bet on MLS matchups throughout the regular and postseason, read on and discover how to sign up and bet on Major League Soccer at talkSPORT BET Sportsbook.

A Brief History of Major League Soccer

Major League Soccer (MLS) is a legacy of the 1994 FIFA World Cup. The competition was officially launched with ten teams in 1996 and has grown into a league of 30 franchises in the United States and Canada.

It’s unique in the football world, as there are no promotions and relegations. Each club is a franchise, with every team owned by the league’s investors, ensuring fixed membership in the competition.

D.C. United won the first MLS title in 1996 and followed it up with wins in 1997 and 1999 to become the dominant force in the league’s early iterations.

However, today, LA Galaxy are the most successful team in MLS history, with six titles between 2002 and 2024. In total, fifteen teams have won at least one MLS title.

MLS Matchups, Teams, and Season Format

Even if you’re an avid football fan, the format and structure of the MLS might seem a little confusing from the outset. The 30 teams are split into two conferences – Eastern and Western, as follows:

Eastern Conference

  • Atlanta United FC
  • Charlotte FC
  • Chicago Fire FC
  • FC Cincinnati
  • Columbus Crew
  • D.C. United
  • Inter Miami CF
  • CF Montreal
  • Nashville SC
  • New England Revolution
  • New York City FC
  • New York Red Bulls
  • Orlando City SC
  • Philadelphia Union
  • Toronto FC

Western Conference

  • Austin FC
  • Colorado Rapids
  • FC Dallas
  • Houston Dynamo FC
  • LA Galaxy
  • Los Angeles FC
  • Minnesota United FC
  • Portland Timbers
  • Real Salt Lake
  • San Diego FC
  • San Jose Earthquakes
  • Seattle Sounders FC
  • Sporting Kansas City
  • St. Louis City SC
  • Vancouver Whitecaps FC

The season runs between February and October; each team plays 34 games. Twenty-eight of these games are home and away ties against other teams in their respective conference, while six are against teams from the other conference.

There’s also an All-Star Game midway through the season, and the team that ends the season with the highest points total of both conferences is awarded the Supporters’ Shield.

Finally, the season ends with the post-season playoffs in October and November, culminating in the MLS Cup. Eighteen teams qualify for the playoffs, contested by the top nine teams from each conference.

The playoff final winner claims the coveted MLS Cup, becoming the end-of-season champion.

MLS Previous Winners & Records

Since the inaugural MLS, 32 teams have competed in the league, though only 30 currently contest in the two conferences. Fifteen teams have won the MLS Cup at least once, and 16 teams have won the Supporters’ Shield at least once.

LA Galaxy are the most successful team in MLS history, with six MLS Cups and four Supporters’ Shields. They’re followed by D.C. United, who have won the MLS Cup four times and the Shield four times.

The New York Red Bulls are the most successful MLS team without an MLS Cup. They have won the Supporters’ Shield on three occasions, yet have failed to win the postseason playoffs.
