The UEFA Europa League is the second tier of European continental competition, sandwiched between the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Conference League.
It’s a competition that English teams tend to do well in, with Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Aston Villa all among the winners since the turn of the century.
Find out how to bet on every Europa League match and discover the latest odds and markets for this club competition at talkSPORT BET Sportsbook.
The Europa League ranks behind the Champions League and ahead of the Conference League in European football hierarchy.
Qualification is reserved for teams based on their performances in domestic leagues and cup competitions across Europe. Often, domestic cup winners and the teams who finish in the top few places qualify, so it’s a highly competitive and engaging tournament right to the last.
The UEFA Europa League replaced the UEFA Cup at the start of the 2009/10 season following a rebrand. The tournament debuted in 1971, with Tottenham Hotspur winning the first-ever crown, defeating Wolverhampton Wanderers in an all-English two-legged final.
Since then, Liverpool, Ipswich Town, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Aston Villa have all won the final as English teams, while Celtic and Rangers have both lost in Europa League finals since the early 2000s.
Sevilla are the most prolific team in the competition’s history, having won the tournament more times than any other team. They also have a perfect record in the Europa League final, having never reached the last two and lost.
Qualification for the Europa League is determined by the complex UEFA coefficients model. Each association has three berths (split across the Conference League and Europa League), but nations ranked 51 to 55 only get two.
Thirty-six teams make it to the UEFA Europa League proper, contesting a league phase. Each team in the league phase plays eight matches, four at home and four away. The top eight teams proceed directly to the round of 16, while the teams that finish ninth to 24th participate in a playoff. The playoff winners then join the other eight teams in the knockout rounds.
The last two teams standing contest the final, which is always played at a neutral venue in Europe.
