Sir Keir Starmer has been Labour leader since 2020 and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom since 2024. While he hopes for a long and successful term at Number 10 Downing Street, the British political landscape remains unstable, and it remains to be seen how long Starmer will remain in his role.
The next general election must be held by 15 August 2029, and if the Labour Party doesn’t win, a leadership change is likely. But who is in the running to replace Starmer as Labour leader?

An alternative vote system determines the Labour leader. Since 2015, the Labour Party has utilised a one-member, one-vote system, giving all Labour MPs, party members, and affiliate organisation members one equally weighted vote to pick their next leader. A leadership candidate must receive the backing of at least 20% of MPs to appear on the ballot.
Sir Keir Starmer won the Labour nomination in April 2020, taking over from Jeremy Corbyn.
The following names have already been thrown in the hat to lead Labour when Keir Starmer vacates his position:
Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Manchester, is the current favourite to be the next Labour leader. He’s held his position since 2017 and has been a Labour Party member since he was 15. Burnham is popular among Labour members and is seen by many as the natural successor to Sir Keir Starmer and a possible Prime Minister in waiting.
Until a well-documented tax controversy ended her role as the deputy leader of the Labour Party, Angela Rayner was considered by many as the apparent successor to Keir Starmer. Known as Labour’s “working-class warrior,” it’s a long way back to the top for Rayner, but she has enough time to turn things around and could be in with a shout by the time of Labour’s next leadership campaign.
Current Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Wes Streeting is another candidate for the Labour leadership role. He has been an MP for Ilford North since 2015 and is known as a strong advocate for LGBTQ rights. He has talked openly about his personal health struggles and admiration for the NHS.
Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves will likely launch a bid to become the next Labour leader when the time comes. She started her career at the Bank of England but was elected to Parliament in the 2010 election and served as the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer between 2021 and 2024. Though she has weathered a few storms since joining the government, her position of strength and influence could stand her in good stead in a future leadership race.
Yvette Cooper was appointed as the UK Foreign Secretary in September 2025 following a cabinet reshuffle and was instrumental in the government’s decision to officially recognise the state of Palestine. Cooper is a long-standing politician and Labour Party member, initially elected as the Labour MP for Pontefract and Castleford in 1997.
In the September 2025 cabinet reshuffle, David Lammy was appointed deputy Prime Minister, replacing Angela Rayner. The MP for Tottenham has been a long-standing member of Labour and has held many significant offices during his tenure. If Labour members vote for experience in their next leadership campaign, Lammy might be their man.
Another to benefit from the September 2025 reshuffle, Shabana Mahmood was appointed UK Home Secretary by Keir Starmer. She was given the role for her supposedly tougher stance on immigration following growing pressure on the Prime Minister to stop illegal channel crossings. She has served as the MP for Birmingham Ladywood since May 2020.
