NCAAB Betting Odds

Before hitting the NBA, America’s best college-aged basketball players go through the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA). This is where they learn their way around the net, playing for one of America’s prestigious sports programs.

Read on for everything you need to know about college basketball odds including what types of markets are available for the sport and which types of wagers you're more likely to come across.

What are NCAAB Betting Markets?

NCAAB betting isn’t all that different from association basketball markets. Point spread betting is the most common with both NBA and NCAA basketball odds, though there are always other markets available, including:

NCAAB Point Spread Betting

Point spread betting is quite popular, likely because a basket can give either two or three points. This makes for a more dynamic game where one throw can make all the difference. Point spreads capitalise on this by choosing a favourite and an underdog, with a handicap between them.

Here’s an example – the Baylor Bears are the -6.5 favourite against the Kansas Jayhawks at +6.5. Basically, if you bet on the Bears, they need to win by at least six points. If you bet on the Jayhawks, however, they need to close that gap. They can either lose by less than six points or win the game completely.

NCAAB Over/Under Betting

Over/under betting is another common market for college basketball odds. Oddsmakers predict a number for one of the game’s many stats – most commonly the score. If the prediction for all points scored by both teams is 155.5, you can bet if the score will stay at/under 155 or go over it.

Over/under bets tend to have a decimal place in them. This is to stop a draw, where no side gets paid out. In our example, it's impossible for 155.5 exactly to be scored. Over/under bets can be applied to nets scored by one team, or even a certain player.

NCAAB Money Line Betting

Money line betting is a simpler market where you essentially bet on who will win. Like other bets, there’s a clear favourite and underdog decided by the oddsmakers. They are given odds that determine the payout should they win. Underdogs provide favourable payouts because they’re less likely to win.

For example, our Bears vs Jayhawks game. If the Bears are the favourite at 2/5, then every £5 bet will get a £2 profit should they win. If the Jayhawks are underdogs at 15/8, every £8 you bet will get £15 back.

NCAAB Recent Winners

The collegiate basketball landscape changes quickly as players age out of the NCAA. This results in a more tumultuous scene where any college can win the NCAA Championship, a tense elimination tournament called March Madness. Here are the results of the last three Division I basketball nationals:

  • In 2021, the Baylor Bears won against the Gonzaga Bulldogs at 86-70. It was their school’s first national victory, against a team that entered the NCAA tournament as top seed.
  • In 2022, the Kansas Jayhawks beat the North Carolina Tar Heels 72-69. Both Kansas and North Carolina rank second and third in Division I victories, across all games. It was the Jayhawks’ fourth NCAA championship and their first since 2008.
  • In 2023, the University of Connecticut Huskies won against the San Diego State Aztecs – 76-59. It marked the Huskies’ fourth national championship victory since 1999.

Who are the Favourites to Win in NCAAB?

The next NCAAB national tournament is scheduled for March 2024. March Madness typically runs from then till April, when the final two teams clash. Early favourites include the Purdue Boilermakers and the Arizona State Sun Devils. March Madness earned its name for its dramatic upsets, making it one of the most-speculated basketball events of the year.

The top three colleges for winning March Madness are UCLA, Kentucky, and North Carolina. The UCLA Bruins lead with 11 national championships, the Kentucky Wildcats have eight, and the North Carolina Tar Heels have six. Given their historical dominance, each college attracts a lot of fans, though there’s no guarantee any one of them will win.

What are the most popular types of college basketball bets?

Point spreads are the most popular college basketball bets. They’re also the most popular bets on NBA basketball games. They enable fans of either college to play the favourite or underdog, at better odds than if they’d chosen a money line bet.
