Since its introduction in the 1970s, ODI has grown rapidly. It bridges the run-fest of T20 cricket with the pragmatic approach taken by most teams in test matches.
So, join us as we explain how to bet on ODI cricket at talkSPORT BET and discover some tournaments and markets you can bet on throughout the cricket season.
As the name suggests, a one-day international (ODI) cricket match is played over one day. Each team bats for a maximum of 50 overs, and the team with the most runs wins at the end of the day.
ODIs are also known as the white-ball form of cricket, which contrasts with red-ball test matches, which usually occur over five days.
This format of cricket has become increasingly popular in the past decade, with fans drawn to the same-day conclusion rather than the longer format of test matches.
An ODI is the mid-length format of cricket, sandwiched between test matches that take several days and T-20 matches, usually concluded within a few hours.
National teams play ODI cricket, but several high-profile domestic contests worldwide follow the 50-over format. The most prominent ODI tournament in world cricket is undoubtedly the ICC World Cup, contested every four years.
England and Australia contested the first ODI cricket match in January 1971 at the MCC. It was the birth of an extremely popular game format, though, at the time, it was seen as a short-term solution to a weather-affected Ashes test.
One of the reasons for the popularity of ODI cricket is that it’s much easier to understand than the longer format of the game. Over one day (usually 5-8 hours of play), each team bats and fields once.
The game begins with the toss of a coin. The captain who wins the toss decides whether to bat or field first. If the captain elects to bat, his team takes to the crease for a maximum of 50 overs.
The objective is for the team to score as many runs as possible in those 50 overs. This often results in higher-scoring games than we see in test matches, with more incentive for players to take riskier boundary shots as the game progresses.
The team in the field may limit the batting team’s scoring potential by taking wickets. If they take ten wickets before the 50 overs are bowled, the batting team is all out, and the teams switch positions.
The winning team is the side with the most runs at the close of play. The game will finish early if the second team to bat reaches its target with overs and wickets to spare.
The ICC maintains and updates the ODI rankings, as it does test cricket. However, unlike test cricket, ODI teams don’t contest an ongoing championship, focusing instead on qualifying for the World Cup.
Still, the top-rated test teams tend to do well in the ODI format, with the leading cricket nations situated in the top ten of each format. As of January 2025, here’s the top ten ranked ODI nations in the world:
