The Most Popular Races to Bet on at Royal Ascot

Although all 35 races held throughout Royal Ascot are prestigious in their own way, there are five headline races that all the trainers and jockeys are desperate to land:

The Queen Anne Stakes

The Queen Anne Stakes is usually held on the opening day of Royal Ascot. This one-mile race is open to horses aged four and above. It received Group 1 status in 2003. Frankie Dettori has won this race a record seven times.

The Prince of Wales’s Stakes

This Group 1 race is the headline race of day two at Royal Ascot, carrying a prize purse of £1 million. Each year, it attracts many of the world’s best middle-distance thoroughbreds.

The Ascot Gold Cup

The Ascot Gold Cup is arguably the highest-profile race in UK horseracing for stayers. Typically staged during Ladies’ Day, this race dates back to 1807 and has an immense history. Yeats won four Ascot Gold Cups back-to-back between 2006-09.

The Coronation Stakes

The Group 1 Coronation Stakes is a race held exclusively for three-year-old fillies. It typically features the fillies that ran well at Newmarket’s 1000 Guineas or the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches at Longchamp.

The Platinum Jubilee Stakes

Formerly known as the Diamond Jubilee Stakes, this Group 1 race is staged over just six furlongs. It also attracts some of the top three-year-olds from the Southern Hemisphere, as the race forms part of the internationally recognised Global Sprint Challenge.

Popular Royal Ascot Betting Markets at talkSPORT BET

Wondering how best to take advantage of the latest Royal Ascot odds? Here are three of the most popular betting markets for Royal Ascot and many other headline race meetings across the UK:

Ante-Post

Place an ante-post bet on a horse you like before the race’s on-the-day betting market has opened. If your selection doesn’t go on to race in the event, your bet still stands, so it’s a riskier form of betting on Royal Ascot but a useful option if you want to find early value.

On-The-Day

You could wait until the on-course betting market has opened on the day of the race. The odds may not be as favourable, but at least you’ll know your horse is entered and has a chance of winning.

Each-Way

With so many Grade 1 horses involved at Royal Ascot, you may look to take your Royal Ascot picks each-way. This means you’ll be paid at 1/4 of the odds displayed if your selection can ‘place’, i.e. finish inside the top two, three or four places, depending on the number of runners in the race.

Exploring the History of Royal Ascot

Royal Ascot has established itself as one of the planet's most prestigious horse racing events. With a rich heritage dating back almost three centuries of horse racing, Royal Ascot was founded by Queen Anne in 1768 and has since become synonymous with its sporting excellence.

The highlight of Royal Ascot is the Royal Procession, where members of the British Royal Family arrive in horse-drawn carriages to start each day of the five-day meeting.

Aside from its sporting significance, Royal Ascot is also renowned for its sartorial splendour and social atmosphere. The dress code encourages attendees to dress to impress, with extravagant hats and stylish outfits lining the grandstands.

At the time of writing, Royal Ascot has established itself as the most valuable race meeting in the UK, with combined prize money totalling a record £9.25 million across all five days of first-class racing.
