Starters orders, it’s time to place your bets on the Kentucky Derby at talkSPORT BET. Churchill Downs in Louisville is the home of the historic Kentucky Derby, a one-and-a-quarter-mile race on dirt that makes or breaks flat racing thoroughbreds.
The Kentucky Derby also happens to be the first leg of the US Triple Crown for three-year-old horses. The second leg is the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Racecourse in Baltimore, Maryland. Meanwhile, the third and final leg is staged at New York’s Belmont Park, the Belmont Stakes.
The Kentucky Derby is the first of three wins a horse needs to secure the Triple Crown. The last horse to do so was American Pharaoh in 2015, ending a 37-year drought since Affirmed’s Triple Crown triumph in 1978.
Today, the Kentucky Derby attracts tens of thousands of spectators to Churchill Downs annually, with millions more tuning in to watch the race worldwide. It’s a symbol of excellence, tradition and prestige in horse racing.
The Kentucky Derby lets you bet on the world’s finest three-year-old thoroughbreds. The 2026 Kentucky Derby will mark the 152nd anniversary of this iconic race.
The Kentucky Derby has a rich history dating back to 1875. The concept for the race was devised by Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr., who was inspired by the horse races he witnessed during his travels across Europe. Upon his return to Kentucky, Clark envisioned a similar event which would showcase the region’s thoroughbred horses and attract spectators far and wide.
The first Kentucky Derby was held on May 17th, 1875, at the newly constructed Churchill Downs racetrack in Louisville. The race was exclusively for three-year-old thoroughbreds, just like today, with 15 entered. The inaugural race winner was Aristides, who was led to victory by jockey Oliver Lewis.
Over the decades, the Kentucky Derby has grown in stature and popularity. In fact, it’s grown to such an extent that it’s now one of the most iconic events in American sports and popular culture. The race is well-known for its traditions, such as the singing of “My Old Kentucky Home” by racegoers pre-race, the garland of roses awarded to the winning horse and the consumption of mint juleps, a traditional Derby beverage.
Throughout its history, the Kentucky Derby has produced a string of legendary horseracing moments and iconic champions to boot. Such names as Secretariat, Seattle Slew and American Pharaoh were built on their Kentucky Derby successes.
Secretariat finished the Kentucky Derby in the fastest time ever in 1973. Secretariat finished first in 1 minute and 59 seconds, smashing the previous record set by Northern Dancer nine years before.
Looking at the Kentucky Derby record books, two trainers currently hold the record for the most wins in this prestigious race.
Ben Jones and Bob Baffert have both trained six Kentucky Derby winners. Ben Jones’ feat is somewhat better than Baffert’s, considering his six wins have come from just 11 races, compared with Baffert’s 24 starts.
Jones’ wins came between 1938 and 1952, with Lawrin his inaugural victory and Hill Gail his final winner. As for Baffert, his six Kentucky Derby wins came between 1997 and 2020. Baffert’s also got two Triple Crown titles to his name, with American Pharoah becoming the first to achieve the feat since Affirmed in 1978.
