When and Where is the 2026 FIFA World Cup?

This edition of the World Cup will be a truly historic one, as it becomes the first World Cup to be jointly hosted by three countries: the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The competition, which spans the North American continent, will showcase matches across sixteen cities, bringing the spectacle of world football to a diverse range of venues and fanbases.

The tournament is scheduled to run from June 11th to July 19th, 2026. The opening match will take place at Mexico City’s legendary Estadio Azteca, a stadium steeped in World Cup history.

The month-long festival of football will culminate in the final on July 19th at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The World Cup Format & Fixtures

The FIFA World Cup is held every four years, and it’s widely accepted as the most prestigious and exciting football tournament on the planet.

Teams from all confederations participate in gruelling regional qualifiers from South America to Oceania to make it to the finals, with 48 nations securing a spot at the 2026 tournament. This will be the biggest ever World Cup, with sixteen more teams than Qatar's 2022 tournament.

Despite the bigger field, the competition will follow a familiar format. The top two teams from the 12 groups will progress automatically to the knockout round, and the eight best third-placed teams will join them.

In the group phase, each team will play three matches, one against each of the other teams in their group. The knockout fixtures are all one match against another team, with extra time and penalties available if the score is level after 90 minutes.

There will be four knockout phases before the third-place playoff on July 18th and the World Cup final on July 19th.

Previous Winners of the FIFA World Cup

Only eight teams have won the FIFA World Cup since its first iteration in 1930, and all these nations have been from Europe or South America.

Not only are they the team with most wins (five), Brazil are the only team to have played in every World Cup tournament since its inception. While Seleção haven’t won the main prize since 2002, they will hope the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti provides the Midas touch ahead of this season’s tournament.

England have only won the World Cup once, their famous Wembley victory over Germany in 1966. In the last 35 years, they have finished fourth twice, in 1990 and 2018. 2026 could be the year the Three Lions make their first final since ’66.

If you’re planning to back the 2026 World Cup winner based on the tournament’s previous winners, here’s a list of all the teams to have won the World Cup, with details on the number of wins and the years they were triumphant:

Who Are the Favourites for the 2026 World Cup?

With the 2026 World Cup soon upon us, there are plenty of potential champions to look out for when thinking of placing a bet.

Spain enter the 2026 World Cup as one of the top favourites, thanks to a golden generation of young talent.

With players like Pedri, Gavi, and teenage sensation Lamine Yamal leading the charge, Spain combine technical brilliance with a fluid, possession-based style that has made them one of the most exciting sides in world football.

Their triumph at Euro 2024 proved they can already deliver on the big stage, and in North America, they’ll be looking to add another World Cup to their collection.

France remain a strong force, boasting one of international football’s deepest and most complete squads. Champions in 2018 and finalists in 2022, Les Bleus consistently deliver when it matters most.

Brazil, the most successful nation in World Cup history, are also contenders. After falling short in recent tournaments, their squad is filled with flair, attacking firepower, and emerging stars eager to restore their dominance on the world stage.

England head into the tournament with one of their strongest squads in decades. With a mix of youthful talent and experience, England’s attacking options make them a dangerous opponent for any side.

After coming close in recent international competitions, the Three Lions will believe that 2026 could finally be the year they end their long wait for a second World Cup.

Argentina, the reigning champions from Qatar 2022, cannot be overlooked. Even if Lionel Messi is no longer at the centre of their plans, Argentina still possess a rich pool of talent and the confidence that comes with being world champions, keeping them among the front runners in North America.

Beyond these giants, Germany and Portugal are also worth keeping an eye on. Germany is rebuilding after recent struggles, but their history and emerging young stars make them a dangerous prospect.

Portugal, meanwhile, continue to produce exciting talent, and if their squad clicks, they have the potential to challenge the favourites.
