The game of darts is centuries old, with the oldest dartboards dating back to the 15th century. By the 20th century, darts had graduated to being a professional sport. The first World Professional Darts Championship was held in 1978.
Darts became mainstream when players like Eric Bristow and Jocky Wilson displayed their skills and elevated the game's competitive level. The World Matchplay is a professional darts tournament that forms one of the three legs of the Triple Crown. The other major darts tournaments are the World Championship and Premier League Darts.
The game gradually spread through other countries. The creation of the Professional Darts Corporation or PDC in 1992 would lead to the establishment of numerous international tournaments and the emergence of new stars like Phil Taylor and Raymond van Barneveld.
World Matchplay Darts has been in existence since 1994. The event has been played annually at Winter Gardens in Blackpool, and American professional darts player Larry Butler was the first-ever champion of the competition.
Professional darts players qualify for the World Matchplay through the PDC Order of Merit. The top 16 players at the cut-off point are seeded in the tournament, while the top 16 players on the Pro Tour Order of Merit who fail to qualify on the cut-off date are unseeded entries. A total of 32 players feature in the main event.
The format of World Matchplay Darts is fairly simple. Every match has to be won by two clear legs, with an option to extend to a maximum of six legs if a tie-breaker is required.
English professional dart player Nathan Aspinall is the current champion of the World Matchplay. He won his first World Matchplay title by defeating Johnny Clayton 18-6in the final. The World Matchplay also has a separate women's event, won by Beau Greaves in 2023.
