The History of the Tour de France

The Tour de France is one of the most prestigious and physically gruelling cycling races in the world. It boasts a rich and storied history spanning well over a century. The race was conceived by a French newspaper, L’Auto, to boost its readership. It quickly evolved into a legendary sporting event, capturing the imagination of millions of cycling fans worldwide.

The first Tour de France took place on July 1st, 1903. The race consisted of six stages, covering a total distance of 2,428 kilometres, with cyclists riding from Paris to Lyon, Marseille, Toulouse, Bordeaux and back to the French capital. The overall winner was Maurice Garin, who sealed his place in cycling history forever.

Since its inception, the Tour de France has undergone numerous alterations and innovations. The race has expanded significantly to feature more stages, varied routes and increasingly challenging terrain. All of this has culminated in one of the toughest tests of skill and endurance for the world’s best road cyclists.

Over the years, the Tour de France has become synonymous with iconic climbs like the Col du Tourmalet and the Alpe d’Huez. It’s also given rise to iconic champions such as Bernard Hinault, Eddy Merckx and Miguel Indurain.

The Tour de France has also weathered its fair share of challenges and controversies through the years. From doping scandals to disputes over race tactics, the Tour has faced scrutiny and criticism throughout its history. However, the race continues to endure, attracting the world’s best cyclists and passionate fans year in and year out.

Recent Winners of the Tour de France

Tadej Pogačar’s 2024 victory was notable for his dominance, also winning the Giro d’Italia in the same year, a feat not achieved since 1998. Jonas Vingegaard, the 2022 and 2023 winner, finished second in 2024, continuing their rivalry.

Danish cyclist Jonas Vingegaard has won the general classification for the last two Tours. Vingegaard, who rides for Team Jumbo-Visma, pipped two-time winner Tadej Pogacar into second place, with Adam Yates coming in third place.

Vingegaard’s winning margin of seven minutes and 29 seconds at the 2023 Tour de France was the biggest recorded since the 2014 event, won by Vincenzo Nibali.

The 2022 edition of the Tour was the fastest in the race’s history, with Vingegaard achieving an astonishing average speed of 42.102 km/h, almost double the average speed of the slowest Tour de France in 1919.

In 2020 and 2021, Slovenian rider Tadej Pogačar landed back-to-back general classifications in the Tour de France. If it wasn’t for Vingegaard, Pogačar would have been on course for a third yellow jersey in succession.

In 2019, Britain’s Geraint Thomas came within a whisker of winning the Tour de France. He was pipped by his teammate of Team Ineos, Egan Bernal, with the Colombian taking the title by just one minute and 11 seconds. Thomas won the general classification in 2018, but the Welshman couldn’t quite repeat the feat 12 months later.

Which Riders Have Won the Most Tours?

There are four cyclists who have won the Tour de France general classification five times apiece. Frenchman Jacques Anquetil was the first to achieve this feat, followed by Belgian Eddy Merckx and a second Frenchman, Bernard Hinault.

In the early 1990s, the Tour de France was dominated by one man – Spaniard, Miguel Indurain. He went on to win five consecutive Tours from 1991 to 1995.

Which Riders Have the Most Tour de France Stage Wins?

As many as 34 riders have won at least ten or more stages of the Tour de France. Two riders are out in front of the rest with the most stage wins.

Belgian icon Eddy Merckx held the record with 34 stage wins for several years until Briton Mark Cavendish managed to equal and then surpass this total before his retirement.

As it stands, Cavendish is now the all-time Tour de France stage record holder, with 35 wins to his name.

Who Are the Contenders in the 2025 Tour de France Odds?

As you might expect from reading the recent Tour de France winners section, Tadej Pogacar is expected to be the man to beat again in the 2025 Tour. He’s currently the odds-on favourite, with Jonas Vingegaard, Primoz Roglic and Remco Evenepoel currently featuring high in the outright winner market, too.

Evenepoel is aged just 25 and is one of the most precocious talents in road cycling today. The son of former racing cyclist Patrick Evenepoel, Remco won the Vuelta a Espana in 2022 and has set his sights on winning his maiden Tour de France.
