Say what you will about LIV Golf's arrival, but it has undoubtedly driven innovation in one of the world’s oldest sports.

That’s precisely how we’ve arrived at the TGL golf event, a PGA-backed league launched in 2025, featuring golf simulators, an artificial short-game area, a purpose-built stadium, and 24 of the best golfers in the world.

Join us as we introduce you to TGL golf and explain how you can bet on this exciting format at talkSPORT BET Sportsbook.

Introducing TGL Golf: A New Concept for 2025

TGL is a new and revolutionary golf competition, first played in 2025. It combines simulator technology with real-world golf, allowing fans to tune into immersive golf gameplay between the best players in the world.

Hosted at the SoFi Centre in Florida, each TGL event is played in front of a live audience. The players hit balls into a simulator screen before moving to a custom-built short-game area to finish each hole. The event uses a team format and features golfers like Tiger Woods, Shane Lowry, and Colin Morikawa.

The event was conceptualised by Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and Mike McCarley and is seen by many as the PGA’s answer to LIV Golf. But who can you watch in the PGL golf league, and how does it work?

How does TGL Golf work?

The TGL competition brings technology to the elite level of the game. Every TGL match is held in an indoor stadium at the SoFi Centre in Florida. The players show off their long-game skills by driving the ball into a state-of-the-art simulator projected onto giant screens.

Then, at the business end of the holes, the players will move to a custom-made short-game area, where they will have to finish the round by getting up and down on an artificial putting and chipping surface. Below is the format and some of the rules that make this a truly one-of-a-kind golf tournament:

  • Each team will play every other team once in a round-robin league format. The top teams will progress to the semi-finals and final, with the winner crowned after a best-of-three final at the end of March.
  • Every TGL match is contested over 15 holes, with 3v3 matches taking place. Nine holes are played as triples, while six are played as singles. The singles take place over two holes apiece.
  • Each hole is scored with two points for the winner. A nearest-to-the-pin contest will decide the winner if the match is tied at the end.
  • Every team gets a “hammer towel” they can throw during the contest. This effectively doubles the value of the hole. The other team can refuse the towel, but they must forfeit the hole if they do.
  • Players only have 40 seconds to hit their shot after their ball is placed on the ground. If they exceed the timeframe, they will receive a one-stroke penalty.
  • Every team gets four timeouts per match, which they can use to discuss strategy or to take some of the pressure out of the game.
  • During TGL matches, the players wear mics so the audience can hear their interactions.

TGL 2025 Teams: 6 Teams & 24 of the World’s Best Golfers

Twenty-four of the world’s top-ranked PGA players competed in the inaugural season of TGL golf. This includes the event’s co-founders, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, who turned out for Jupiter Links and Boston Common, respectively. Both failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Below are the teams and players from season one:

  • Atlanta Drive GC: Patrick Cantlay, Lucas Glover, Billy Horschel, Justin Thomas.
  • Boston Common GC: Keegan Bradley, Hideki Matsuyama, Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott.
  • Jupiter Links GC: Max Homa, Tom Kim, Kevin Kisner, Tiger Woods.
  • Los Angeles GC: Collin Morikawa, Sahith Theegala, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose.
  • New York GC: Matt Fitzpatrick, Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele, Cameron Young.
  • The Bay GC: Ludvig Aberg, Wyndham Clark, Min Woo Lee, Shane Lowry.

Who Won TGL 2025?

The inaugural 2025 TGL golf season brought high-tech drama to prime-time golf. Six star-studded teams competed in a fast-paced, indoor format at the SoFi Centre.

After 15 regular-season matches, Atlanta Drive GC won the first-ever TGL season, winning the best-of-three SoFi Cup Finals in March 2025. They defeated New York Golf Club 6-5 on March 24th and 4-3 on March 25th to seal the trophy.

Therefore, it was a hugely successful first season in this new format for Patrick Cantlay, Lucas Glover, Billy Horschel, and Justin Thomas, who will likely stay together for the 2026 tournament.

Billy Horschel delivered memorable moments, including a game-changing birdie in the final, earning widespread praise.

Atlanta claimed $9 million in prize money, highlighting the huge financial draw of TGL to some of the world’s best golfers.
