Established in 1957, the Africa Cup of Nations is held every two years and is uniquely positioned immediately after the hectic festive football schedule.
For many European clubs, this means some of their top stars jet off for up to a month to compete in the competition, which consistently delivers incredible drama, glorious goals, and a host of contentious talking points.

The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) usually begins around Christmas and ends in mid-January, but the dates are subject to change, depending on the host nations.
The tournament was first held in 1957 in Sudan, with Egypt securing the first title. The Pharaohs are the most decorated team in AFCON history, followed by Cameroon, Ghana, and Nigeria as the only teams to have won the tournament more than three times.
Like other international tournaments, host nations are determined via a bidding process, and the finals are held over four weeks in various host cities and stadia.
The current format sees 24 nations qualify for the finals. The tournament begins with six groups of four teams, followed by a knockout round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the final. There’s also a third-placed match scheduled for the last weekend of the tournament.

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations will be held in Morocco. It’s the second time Morocco has hosted the tournament; the last time AFCON was here was in 1988, and the hosts finished fourth after losing the third-placed game to Algeria.
Morocco enters this tournament as the favourites, following their impressive showing in the last FIFA World Cup, where they surprised everyone by finishing fourth.
Algeria and Egypt are also heavily fancied to do well in Morocco this year, while the 2023 winners, the Ivory Coast, along with their West African counterparts, Senegal and Nigeria, boast strong squads with considerable potential.
The tournament is scheduled to run from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026. There are nine venues in six host cities, including Agadir, Casablanca, Fez, Marrakesh, Rabat, and Tangier.
The final will be held on January 18th at the 68,700-seater Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
Looking further ahead, the 2027 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations will be the first tournament hosted by three countries. Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania have been selected to host matches, and it will be held during the European summer between June 19th and July 18th.
