Next Prime Minister Odds & Betting

Sir Keir Starmer became the first Labour Prime Minister since Gordon Brown when he assumed office in July 2024. He will be hoping for a long and productive period at Number 10 Downing Street, but the British political arena is an unforgiving place, with the last four Prime Ministers all serving terms of under four years.

Though we’re unsure precisely when the next general election will be, we offer markets and betting odds for the next Prime Minister. Sign up at talkSPORT Sportsbook today and bet on the next leader of the United Kingdom.

When is the Next UK General Election?

General elections must be held no more than five years apart, so the next election in the United Kingdom must be held no later than 15th August, 2029. By UK law, the Prime Minister is entitled to arrange a general election at any point before this.

Should Keir Starmer wish to call an election before August 2029, he must ask the King to dissolve Parliament, and the election will take place 25 days later.

How is the Prime Minister Appointed?

There are 650 seats in the UK, known as constituencies. Each constituency elects a Member of Parliament to represent its residents in the House of Commons. So, on general election day, anyone 18 or over (this will likely be reduced to 16+ by the next election) and registered to vote backs their local candidate, not the person they want to be the Prime Minister.

The UK uses a first-past-the-post system, so the local representative with the most votes becomes the MP. The party with 326 or more seats wins a majority in the House and is asked by the King to form a government.

The leader of that party then becomes the Prime Minister, and the leader of the party with the second most seats assumes the role of leader of the opposition.

Who’s in the Running as the Next UK Prime Minister?

There’s potentially a long way to go before the next UK general election, so things may undoubtedly change by the time British people go to the polls. Still, the following names are among the current favourites to become the next UK Prime Minister, based on polling at the time of writing:

Nigel Farage

Nigel Farage is the MP for Clacton and the leader of Reform UK. Formerly the Brexit Party, Reform’s mandate has recently become popular in the UK. In 2025, the party came first in May’s local elections and, according to YouGov polls, has continuously led voting intention for most of the year.

Farage might be a divisive figure, but he’s the favourite to become the next Prime Minister after Keir Starmer and will likely oversee the main opposition to Labour in the next election campaign.

Andy Burnham

Current Mayor of Manchester, Andy Burnham, is the most likely of the Labour candidates to assume the office of the Prime Minister after Keir Starmer. He has been the Mayor since May 2017 and joined the Labour Party when he was 15.

He also held several positions in Gordon Brown’s government, including Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Secretary of State for Culture, Media & Sport, and Secretary of State for Health.

Wes Streeting

Wes Streeting is the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care in Keir Starmer’s Labour government. His early political life flourished as the President of the National Union of Students, after which he was elected as a Labour councillor for the Chadwell ward on Redbridge London Borough Council.

Streeting may go head-to-head with Andy Burnham in the next Labour leadership contest, and the winner could be the next Prime Minister.

Yvette Cooper

Another of the early favourites to become the next UK Prime Minister is the current Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper. Cooper initially served as the Home Secretary, but switched roles in Starmer’s September 2025 cabinet reshuffle.

She’s an experienced campaigner, having served in several crucial roles during Gordon Brown’s Labour government between 2008 and 2010. She ran for, but ultimately lost, the Labour leadership election in 2015, and may seek another shot at the top job when Keir Starmer’s time is up.

Shabana Mahmood

UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is another Labour candidate aspiring to lead the party. The Birmingham-born barrister has been the Home Secretary since September 2025, and she was favoured for the role because of her tough stance on immigration.

Kemi Badenoch

While the initial polls suggest that the Conservative Party has much work to do to challenge Labour and Reform at the next general election, Kemi Badenoch still has an outside chance of becoming the next British Prime Minister.

As the head of the Conservative Party, Badenoch is the current leader of the opposition and in a strong position to challenge for the top job before or in August 2029.
