Wimbledon Men’s Picks & Predictions

Posted on June 3, 2024June 3, 2024 By Rachel Stuart

The eyes of the British public turn to Wimbledon every summer as the top-ranked ATP players in the world take to the grass of Centre Court.

Seven-time winner Novak Djokovic will be keen to show the world he’s not over the hill. At the same time, 21-year-old defending champion Carlos Alcaraz will hope that an arm injury suffered earlier this season won’t inhibit his title defence.

Who is Favoured to Win Men’s Wimbledon?

Wimbledon 2024 will see the top-ranked ATP players vie for a place on Centre Court at the height of the British summer, and we’ll be served up lots of drama as always. Will Carlos Alcaraz defend his crown, or will Novak Djokovic win again in London? Let’s look at some of the most likely winners of this season’s Wimbledon Championships:

Novak Djokovic

With 98 career titles, Novak Djokovic is one of the greatest tennis players ever. He’s also a serial winner at Wimbledon, with seven titles at Centre Court. Though he’s had a tough start to life in 2024, he always shows up at Wimbledon, so expect the Serbian to feature in the tournament’s latter stages again this year.

Carlos Alcaraz

Seen as Rafael Nadal’s successor, Carlos Alcaraz has already won two Grand Slam titles, and the 21-year-old was sensational at Wimbledon in 2023, defeating Djokovic in five sets. Though an arm injury has derailed his progress slightly so far in 2024, Alcaraz could be back to his best this summer and will hope to retain his crown.

Jannik Sinner

By the end of the French Open, Jannik Sinner could be number one in the ATP World Rankings. The impressive Italian won the Australian Open earlier this year and made it to the 2023 Wimbledon semi-finals. Like Djokovic and Alcaraz, he’s hotly fancied to go all the way at Wimbledon this summer.

Alexander Zverev

Though he’s yet to win a Grand Slam title, Alexander Zverev will hope that 2024 is the year he progresses past the fourth round in Wimbledon for the first time. He’s performed well in the French Open and is currently ranked in the top five of the ATP World Rankings. He hopes to emulate Boris Becker’s spirit as he takes to Centre Court this summer.

Cameron Norrie

2022 Wimbledon semi-finalist Cameron Norrie is the likeliest of the British prospects to win Wimbledon this year. He will be disappointed with his fourth-round exit at the Australian Open earlier this year and will need to be at his best to be the first British player since Andy Murray to win at Wimbledon.

Who is the Men’s Number One Seed at Wimbledon?

At the time of writing, the seeds for Wimbledon have yet to be announced as there’s a lot of tennis still to play ahead of this summer’s tournament. However, world number one Novak Djokovic is likely to be seeded first.

Still, depending on their performance at the French Open, Jannik Sinner or Carlos Alcaraz could be seeded first for Wimbledon. As of June 1, here’s how the ATP top ten rankings look, with the business end of the French Open still to be played:

Position Player Points
1Novak Djokovic (Serbia) 9,960
2Jannik Sinner (Italy) 8,770
3Carlos Alcaraz (Spain)7,300
4Alexander Zverev (Germany) 6,305
5Daniil Medvedev (Russia) 6,295
6 Andrey Rublev (Russia) 4,700
7 Casper Ruud (Norway) 4,425
8Hubert Hurkacz (Poland) 3,885
9 Stefanos Tsitsipas (Greece) 3,700
10Grigor Dimitrov (Bulgaria) 3,555

Has an Unseeded Man Ever Won Wimbledon?

Since 1927, unseeded players have won the men’s singles title twice. The first unseeded win came in 1985 when German player Boris Becker won his first major title. He won again at Wimbledon in 1986 and 1989. He also went on to win the US Open in 1989 and the Australian Open in 1991 and 1996.

In 2001, Goran Ivanisevic stunned Wimbledon when he came from nowhere to win the title against Pat Rafter. Ranked 125th in the world at the time, he remains the lowest-ranked player to win Wimbledon and the only Wild Card pick to win at Centre Court. His achievement ranks as one of the greatest sporting upsets of all time.

Wimbledon Men’s Singles Last Ten Winners

Novak Djokovic, the Serbian star, has left an indelible mark on Wimbledon, clinching six of the past ten men’s singles titles. His consistent triumphs at Centre Court underscore his unparalleled dominance.

In this decade, the British favourite Andy Murray has also tasted victory twice, while the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz and Swiss player Roger Federer have each secured a win, making them the only other players to break Djokovic’s streak.

The table below shows the winner and runner-up from the last ten Wimbledon tournaments, signifying Djokovic’s supremacy in London:

Year Winner Runner Up
2023 Carlos Alcaraz (Spain) Novak Djokovic (Serbia)
2022 Novak Djokovic (Serbia) Nick Kyrgios (Australia)
2021Novak Djokovic (Serbia)Matteo Berrettini (Italy)
2020CANCELLED CANCELLED
2019Novak Djokovic (Serbia)Roger Federer (Switzerland)
2018 Novak Djokovic (Serbia)Kevin Anderson (South Africa)
2017Roger Federer (Switzerland)Marin Cilic (Croatia)
2016 Andy Murray (UK) Milos Raonic (Canada)
2015Novak Djokovic (Serbia)Roger Federer (Switzerland)
2014Novak Djokovic (Serbia)Roger Federer (Switzerland)
2013 Andy Murray (UK) Novak Djokovic (Serbia)

Wimbledon Men’s Singles Trends

Novak Djokovic is the only man in the past ten years to have successfully defended his Wimbledon title, so Carlos Alcaraz has a lot of work on his hands if the Spaniard is to win again in London this time around.

History shows that the Wimbledon winner often emerges from the top three ATP World Rankings. This year, too, it could be a good indicator of the likely champion. Furthermore, all ten past winners had already tasted success in a major tournament before their Wimbledon triumph, underlining the significance of previous major wins in predicting the Wimbledon outcome.
