In 2023, Wimbledon saw one of its greatest shocks when unseeded Marketa Vondrousova stormed to victory against Ons Jabeur in the women’s singles final. Vondrousova will be back in London this summer hoping to repeat her incredible feat, but she will be challenged by world number one Iga Swiatek, who is desperate to secure her first Grand Slam win on British soil.

Who is Favoured to Win Women’s Wimbledon?
It might seem unusual to preview Wimbledon without mentioning last year’s winner as one of this year’s favourites, but that’s the case in 2024. Marketa Vondrousova’s stunning win in 2023 was remarkable. Still, given that Venus & Serena Williams are the only players to retain a Wimbledon women’s singles title since the turn of the century, we don’t think Vondrousova will win again this year.
Here are the names to pay attention to at this year’s championships:
Iga Swiatek
World number one Iga Swiatek has had a remarkable start to her career, winning the US Open once and the French Open three times. Though she’s not impressed at Wimbledon as a professional – she’s never made it past the quarter-finals stage – she did win Wimbledon as a junior in 2018. This could be the year she secures her first Wimbledon Championship; we expect it will be the first of many when it arrives.
Aryna Sabalenka
Powerful Belarussian champion Aryna Sabalenka secured her second successive Australian Open win in 2024 and is currently the world number two. She appeared as a semi-finalist at Wimbledon last year, so she knows what it takes to reach the final stages and will fancy her chances of winning on the Centre Court.
Ons Jabeur
We were all stunned that Marketa Vondrousova defeated Ons Jabeur in the 2023 Wimbledon final. It was the Tunisian’s second successive Wimbledon final defeat following her 2022 loss to Elena Rybakina. Will this be the third time lucky for Jabeur? We feel like she saves her best for Wimbledon and will be determined to seal the deal this time.
Elena Rybakina
Elena Rybakina’s 2022 Wimbledon triumph remains her only Grand Slam prize, but the talented Kazakh is undoubtedly destined for another title. She recovered brilliantly in the 2022 final to beat Ons Jabeur and was seeded 17th at the start of the tournament. We expect her to progress to the later stages of this year’s tournament, and she may surprise a few people again.
Katie Boulter
Katie Boulter is the only British player inside the world top 30 and she’s the most likely of the home talent to perform well at Wimbledon. She has made it to the third round of Wimbledon twice, in 2022 and 2023, so she will need to go better this year to secure a home victory for the Wimbledon crowd for the first time since Virginia Wade won in 1977.
Who is the Ladies’ Number One Seed at Wimbledon?
With a lot of tennis still to play between now and Wimbledon, the seeds for the 2024 tournament haven’t been released. However, the current WTA World Rankings can give us a good idea of who will likely be seeded.
Given how far ahead she is in the rankings, Iga Swiatek will likely begin Wimbledon 2024 as the number one seed. But with tennis still to be played at the French Open, below are the top ten players in the world as of June 1 2024:
| Position | Player | Points |
| 1 | Iga Swiatek (POL) | 11,695 |
| 2 | Aryna Sabalenka (BELARUS) | 8,138 |
| 3 | Coco Gauff (USA) | 7,638 |
| 4 | Elena Rybakina (KAZ) | 5,673 |
| 5 | Jessica Pegula (USA) | 4,550 |
| 6 | Marketa Vondrousova (CZE) | 4,143 |
| 7 | Maria Sakkari (GRE) | 3,980 |
| 8 | Qinwen Zheng (CHN) | 3,945 |
| 9 | Ons Jabeur (TUN) | 3,748 |
| 10 | Danielle Collins (USA) | 3,472 |
Has an Unseeded Woman Ever Won Wimbledon?
Remarkably, 2023 Czech winner Marketa Vondrousova became the only unseeded woman of the Open Era to win at Wimbledon when she defeated Ons Jabeur in the final. She also made history as the second-lowest-ranked player ever to make the final. Only Serena Williams (ranked 181st at the time) reached the final of Wimbledon with a lower world ranking when she met Angelique Kerber in 2018.
Wimbledon Women’s Singles Last Ten Winners
While Novak Djokovic has dominated the men’s singles at Wimbledon over the past ten years, nine women have won the singles crown in the past ten iterations, a remarkable feat. Only Serena Williams has won the Wimbledon Singles on more than one occasion in the past decade. Below are the details of the previous winners and runners-up of the women’s Wimbledon singles since 2013:
| Year | Winner | Runner Up |
| 2023 | Marketa Vondrousova (CZE) | Ons Jabeur (TUN) |
| 2022 | Elena Rybakina (KAZ) | Ons Jabeur (TUN) |
| 2021 | Ashleigh Barty (AUS) | Karolina Pliskova (CZE) |
| 2020 | CANCELLED | CANCELLED |

Wimbledon Women’s Singles Ten Year Trends
Serena Williams stands alone in her dominance. She is the only woman to have defended her Wimbledon singles crown since 2013, when she won consecutively in 2015 and 2016. Serena is also the only Wimbledon winner of the past decade to make the Australian and French Open finals in the same season as winning in London.
Eight out of the past ten Wimbledon winners were ranked in the WTA top 15. Interestingly, however, Elena Rybakina (17) and Marketa Vondrousova (42) were ranked outside the top 15 when they won on Centre Court. 2023 winner Vondrousova was unseeded at number 42 in the world when she won last year.
