1000 Guineas odds and when is it?

Posted on March 25, 2024March 25, 2024 By Rachel Stuart

The 1000 Guineas Stakes is one of the classics of the British horse racing season, and it gains attention from all over the world each year. It is a Group 1 flat race open to three-year-old fillies and is run on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket in Suffolk over a distance of one mile.

This year, the race takes place on Sunday, 5 May, but markets offering 1000 Guineas odds will be open well before then. It forms the first leg of the ‘Fillies’ Triple Crown’, with the other races that make up this trilogy being the Oaks at Epsom in late May and the St. Leger at Doncaster in September.

The Triple Crown is rarely won or even attempted any more. You have to go back to 1985 for the last time a filly won all three races when ‘Oh So Sharp’ completed the incredible feat. That ended a 30-year wait after ‘Meld’ accomplished the same achievement in 1955.

Get Ante Post 1000 Guineas odds

Ante post betting is popular in horse racing due to the nature of the sport and the business of it. Horses can progress through various levels of racing depending on what events they win. As they do, trainers and owners will target their horses for specific races that have been graded and/or classified.

talkSPORT BET opens markets in advance for these races, well before course markets open, so they are known as ante-post markets. These markets also offer better odds as we create their prices well in advance of knowing what other horses might enter the race, the form of the horses when the race arrives, and the condition of the track on the day.

The history behind the 1000 Guineas and the ‘Classics’

The historic 1000 Guineas event was first run in April 1814 on the Rowley Mile in Newmarket. This town is widely considered the spiritual home of British horse racing and now accommodates hundreds of stables and horses.

Established by the Jockey Club under the guidance of Sir Charles Bunbury, the race name comes from the original prize fund available. The event was launched five years after the 2000 Guineas, but by the 1860s, it had become one of the most esteemed races for three-year-old horses in Britain and soon formed part of the five ‘Classics’ we still enjoy to this day.

The ‘Classics’ begin at Newmarket in May with the running of the 1000 Guineas, which it is important to note, is restricted to fillies. The 2000 Guineas is open to both sexes – colts and fillies and is usually run on the same weekend.

The 1000 Guineas is often used as a trial for the Oaks, which is run at Epsom a few weeks later over the longer distance of 1m 4f. The Oaks is also restricted to fillies, whist the Derby, also run at Epsom over the same distance, is again open to both sexes.

The final leg of the ‘Classics’ is the St Leger at Doncaster, which is run over 1m 6f and open to both sexes. The ever-increasing distances and variety of tracks that these races take place at is what makes them so challenging, as speed and stamina are needed in abundance. However, they also help to showcase the very best flat horses in the world.

The most recent winners’ 1000 Guineas odds

Sometimes, when you are trying to find the victor of a big race, researching the odds of previous winners can help as a guide.

2023 would see the powerful training yard of Godolphin land its first 1000 Guineas winner since 2011. Ridden by Oisin Murphy, Mawj had previously won two events in the United Arab Emirates before entering the race. She went off at 9/1, only the fifth favourite with the bookies, but stayed on to pinch victory by half-a-length over Tahiyra.

In 2022, Cachet had shown her prowess at Newmarket by winning the Nell Gwyn Stakes over 1m, but despite that form, she only went off at odds of 16/1. However, James Doyle guided her to victory and a big win for the George Boughey yard.

One jockey who will not be competing in the 1000 Guineas this year is Frankie Dettori. He was a popular winner in 2021 on board Mother Earth at odds of 10/1. The win also meant that Aidan O’Brien had trained a fifth winner in six years as the Coolmore Stud dominated the race between 2016 and 2021.

Year Winner Odds
2023 Mawj 9/1
2022 Cachet 16/1
2021 Mother Earth 10/1
2020 Love 4/1
2019 Hermosa 14/1
2018 Billesdon Brook 66/1
2017 Winter 9/1
