Italy are the reigning European champions but that doesn’t tell the whole story about the state of play with the squad. The Azzurri failed to qualify for World Cup 2022 and struggled to make it to this tournament. They relied on a desperate and controversial goalless tie versus Ukraine during the qualification stages to get over the line.
Nonetheless, we’ll see the Italians this summer, but only a few believe they can replicate their achievement from the last edition of the Euros.
German fans have been far from optimistic about their chances of success this summer, too, which is almost unheard of when we speak about them – especially as the host nation!
Their squad isn’t exactly packed with stars like it once was, but renowned names are still lining up for Germany, such as Leroy Sane, Jamal Musiala, and Kai Havertz. Recent friendly results have given fans more hope, but question marks remain about how they’ll cope, given that recent tournament outings have been far from impressive.
Hark back to the period between 2008 and 2012, and you probably wouldn’t have fancied betting on anybody other than Spain to lift an international trophy.
Unfortunately for Las Rojas, those days are over, but signs of life were on show at Wembley in 2021 when they were unlucky to lose to Italy in the Euro 2020 semi-final. Something is happening under the surface here, and a crop of new stars has been introduced to the squad to start a second version of a golden generation.
Who Is Predicted to Win the Euro Cup?
Let’s examine the main favourites for the tournament and how we believe they’ll perform this summer. Can England go all the way and finally break the hoodoo that’s been a monkey on their backs since 1966?
Questions remain regarding Gareth Southgate’s tactical nous, but there’s no denying he’s instilled unity among the squad, which has been missing for decades.
Players are enjoying playing for England again, and this is crucial when it comes to major tournaments. There’s a general feeling that this could be Southgate’s last tournament, and if it is, he’ll want something to show for his efforts.
Phil Foden, Harry Kane, and Jude Bellingham are in the form of their lives, and it’s difficult to see anybody beating England when these three are on song. Add Declan Rice, John Stones, and Bukayo Saka into the mix, and it’s as strong a side as you could hope.
There’s concern about England’s defensive personnel at their disposal, and Jordan Pickford’s club form could have been better this season. But previous tournaments have shown that Southgate compensating for these issues with his pragmatic setup works well.
Who are the primary challengers standing in England’s way? More than understandably, it’s France. Les Bleus ended England’s hopes of World Cup glory in Qatar and were a penalty shootout away from winning the trophy themselves.
They disappointed at the most recent version of the Euros, but this was categorised as merely a blip than anything else, given their astonishing squad depth, World Cup 2018 win, and Euro 2016 final appearance before that.
With Kylian Mbappé at his best (and favourite in the Euro 2024 top scorer odds), Antoine Griezmann showing the determination he has done for Atletico Madrid, and a host of other world-class players complementing them, it’ll surprise nobody if the French lift the Henri Delaunay Trophy in July.
Are England Favourites to Win Euro 2024?
