Most Successful Football Clubs in England

Posted on February 4, 2025February 4, 2025 By Armin Kianmehr

Which English Club Has Won the Most Trophies?

The English Premier League is home to some of the biggest clubs in the world football. Manchester City have dominated English football in recent times, but Manchester United remain the most successful club in England with 20 top-flight titles.

However, in terms of overall league titles, Liverpool has the most with 23. 19 of those have been top-flight championships, with four being Division 2 titles. Man United and Liverpool are arguably the biggest and most decorated clubs in England.

Several clubs from London make up the top-ten list for most league and cup trophies. Arsenal are third behind Liverpool and Man United with 48 trophies – 13 of those have been league titles. Chelsea has 34 (six league titles), and Spurs have won 26 English trophies, though only two of those have been top-flight league championships.

Aston Villa have won 25 English trophies, while Everton have one fewer. Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest, and Wolverhampton Wanderers are also among the top ten most successful English football clubs.

Which English Club Has Won the Most European Trophies?

Not only have Liverpool won 23 league titles and a whole host of domestic cup competitions, but the Reds are also the most successful English side in Europe. Liverpool have won a total of 14 European and international trophies.

The Merseyside giants have won the coveted UEFA Champions League (previously the European Cup) on six occasions. Only Real Madrid and AC Milan have won it more times. Liverpool have also been crowned UEFA Europa League winners on three occasions and have won the UEFA Super Cup four times. The Reds have also won the FIFA Club World Cup, taking their international trophy count to 14.

Chelsea are the second-most successful English club side in Europe, having won eight trophies. The Blues have been Champions League winners twice, while Man United have won three Champions Leagues. Nottingham Forest has won UEFA’s elite club competition on two occasions, whereas Aston Villa and Man City have one European Cup win each.

Who Are the Most Successful English Clubs Since 2000?

The Premier League started in 1992, attracting huge interest and pulling in vast amounts of money. Since 2000, the bigger clubs have pulled away from the chasing pack on and off the pitch. The big six consist of Man City, Man United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Tottenham Hotspur, six of the richest clubs in the world.

After their financial takeover, Newcastle United are now in the mix. The Magpies qualified for the 2023-24 Champions League after finishing fourth in the Premier League in 2022-23.

Manchester City

In recent years, Man City have been the best Premier League side by far, especially since the great Pep Guardiola has been at the helm. They have grown in stature since the well-documented Abu Dhabi takeover in 2008 and are now one of the biggest and richest clubs in world football.

Under Guardiola, Man City have won six Premier League titles. They were the most successful club in England in 2022-23, becoming the first team since Man United in 1999 to win the league title, the FA Cup, and the Champions League in one season. City could be the dominant force in England and Europe for the foreseeable future, though they have endured a tough time in the 2024-25 campaign so far and look set to relinquish the Premier League throne at the end of this season.

Manchester United

When Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge, Man United were the most successful football club in England. In the Premier League era, the Red Devils have won 13 titles, which will take some beating. They finished top of the Premier League in its inaugural season and have won countless FA Cup and EFL Cup trophies.

However, they have not won the Premier League since the 2012-13 campaign, which was Ferguson’s final season in charge at Old Trafford. Many top managers have tried but ultimately failed. Erik ten Hag had an excellent first year in the dugout in 2022-23, but he was dismissed earlier in the 2024/25 campaign for a run of dismal results, despite United’s FA Cup triumph over Man City last year.

Whether Ruben Amorim has what it takes to succeed at Old Trafford remains to be seen, but his first few months in the dugout have shown just how difficult a task he has of rebuilding one of England’s most successful football teams.

Liverpool

Liverpool have won the most trophies in English football, but many of them came last century. In fact, since 2000, the Reds have won just one league title, three FA Cups, and four League Cups. Given their electric form in the 2024-25 season, Arne Slot’s men look like they might add a second Premier League title to their cabinet at the end of the campaign.

Liverpool have also excelled in Europe since 2000, picking up the Champions League trophy in 2005 and 2019. In the 2019 final, the Reds beat fellow Premier League side Tottenham in Madrid. Liverpool won the Europa League (UEFA Cup) in 2001, picked up three Super Cups (2001, 2005 & 2019) and were FIFA Club World Cup champions in 2019.

Chelsea

Chelsea is another club who have benefited massively from a financial takeover, becoming the second-most successful English side in terms of European trophies. They have been incredibly successful this century, with five of their six league titles coming after 2000.

Chelsea have had to sit back and watch Man City dominate in recent years, with their last EPL title win coming in 2016-17. With Enzo Maresca now at the helm and American Todd Boehly bankrolling the PL’s most expensive squad, can the Blues get back on top in England?

Arsenal

Arsenal has not had much success in recent times, but the Gunners are still in the top ten of the most successful English football clubs since 2000. Under Arsene Wenger, Arsenal enjoyed plenty of domestic success, picking up three Premier League titles and several domestic cups.

Wenger shook up the Premier League when he arrived as somewhat of an unknown entity in 1996, before guiding Arsenal to the league title in the 1997-98 campaign. The London side also lifted the trophy in 2002 and 2004. The 2003-04 campaign is steeped in history, as Arsenal went the entire league season unbeaten.

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham have yet to win the Premier League, but they have knocked on the door on a few occasions. They have finished in the top four multiple times and reached the 2019 Champions League final, losing out to Liverpool.

Spurs won several trophies in the 1960s, 70s & 80s, though they have not won a domestic cup since 2008. They have reached a few EFL Cup finals since, losing to Man United, Chelsea, and Man City. Tottenham’s last league championship came way back in 1961.

Other Notable Mentions

Since the Premier League started in the early 1990s, seven clubs have won the Premier League. Only the two Manchester sides, Chelsea and Arsenal have won the division more than once.

Man United dominated the early years of the Premier League, winning four of the opening five. However, Blackburn Rovers were a surprise winner in 1995. Since 2000, Man United have won seven titles, while Man City have also picked up eight.

Chelsea have won five English championships since the turn of the century, while Arsenal have won two. Liverpool and Leicester City both have one win each. Leicester’s triumph in the 2015-16 campaign was the most remarkable, as the Foxes were 5000/1 outsiders before a ball was kicked.

After finishing in the top four and taking a Champions League place for 2023-24, Newcastle could be set for years of success under their new ownership. Also, West Ham United were crowned UEFA Conference League winners at the end of the 2022-23 season and with Graham Potter now in charge, they may look to kick on and secure more silverware in the coming seasons.

Which English Football Clubs Bring In the Most Revenue?

The money in English football is mind-blowing. The National Football League (NFL) in America may generate the most revenue, but the English Premier League is not too far behind. The big clubs in England get paid vast amounts of money through commercial TV rights. With the Champions League also being a huge money-spinner, finishing in the top four has never been more crucial for the big teams.

With plenty of success on the pitch, Man City bring in the most revenue these days. They have a state-of-the-art stadium, attract the world’s best players, and have been top dogs in England for quite some time. The 2023 Champions League win has brought even more revenue to the Etihad Stadium.

Man United may not have won a league title for over ten years and counting, but the Red Devils are still one of the richest clubs in the world. They are arguably the biggest when it comes to worldwide support, and Old Trafford remains the largest ground in the Premier League. United have no problems filling their stadium, no matter how things are going on the pitch.

As you would expect, Liverpool also generate huge amounts of revenue each year. The club is run efficiently off the field, and the Reds had plenty of on-field success under Jurgen Klopp. Thanks to his impressive start on Merseyside, it’s likely that their success will continue under Arne Slot.

Chelsea also brings in heaps of cash. However, since Todd Boehly’s arrival, the London giants have also spent more than anyone else. Nevertheless, they remain one of the biggest clubs in England with the highest revenue. The Blues may have missed out on Champions League football last year, but Enzo Maresca’s team are well placed to mount a serious challenge for the top four this season.
