With the Euro 2024 finals coming up fast in Germany, you might have started researching the potential Golden Boot winners this summer.
Fear not – we’ve compiled a list of the 2024 Euro qualifying top scorers to help narrow your search and provide potential angles for value picks ahead of this summer’s finals.
The Top Scorers of the Euro 2024 Qualifying Group Stage
Now that the group stages have been drawn for the Euro 2024 finals let’s run through the hot shots in qualifying to look out for in Germany this summer.
Romelu Lukaku (14 goals)
Belgian talisman Romelu Lukaku created a new goalscoring record in the European Championship qualifiers. The former Chelsea and Manchester United ace notched 14 goals in the group stage, which surpassed the 13-goal goalscoring record previously set by David Healy and Robert Lewandowski.
In Belgium’s final group stage game, Lukaku bagged four goals in a 5-0 hammering of Azerbaijan, cementing Belgium as Group F winners. The AS Roma striker is in great form for club and country and could be a major force for his country at this summer’s finals.
Cristiano Ronaldo (10 goals)
Portugal’s Euro 2024 qualifying campaign could not have gone much better. They topped Group J with a 100% win record, scoring 36 goals and conceding only two. Portuguese legend Cristiano Ronaldo notched ten goals throughout the campaign, registering two assists, too.
Ronaldo, the headline signing in the Saudi Pro League, has no plans to retire yet and will look to lead the line for Portugal again in Germany.
Kylian Mbappe (9 goals)
French goalscoring sensation Kylian Mbappe may just have won almost everything there is to win in world football. However, he’s yet to finish top of the pile as the leading scorer of a European Championship qualification stage. This time, Mbappe notched nine goals thanks largely to a hat-trick against Gibraltar on matchday nine.
Harry Kane (8 goals)
England finished their unbeaten qualifying group stage and reached the Euro 2024 finals with little trouble. Three Lions captain Harry Kane ended the campaign with eight goals to his name. The Bayern Munich marksman remains England’s focal point in the final third, and, provided he stays fit in the second half of the Bundesliga season; he’ll be the favourite to finish England’s top goalscorer this summer.
Rasmus Højlund (7 goals)
Manchester United and Denmark striker Rasmus Højlund ended the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign with seven goals. Højlund only played eight of the Dane’s ten qualifying games but finished with 2.88 average goal attempts per game. A strong second half to the Premier League at Old Trafford would put Højlund in good shape to make an impression on this summer’s Euro 2024 finals.
Scott McTominay (7 goals)
McTominay is undoubtedly the unlikeliest name to feature on the Euro qualifying top scorers list. Still, the Scottish defensive midfielder struck seven times in Scotland’s successful campaign to reach the Euro 2024 finals.
McTominay, who usually plays as a holding midfielder for Manchester United, thrives as a box-to-box midfielder for his country – Erik ten Hag, take note!
How Does This Compare with Euro Qualifying Top Scorers of Past Tournaments?
Has Romelu Lukaku’s 14-goal haul in the recent Euro 2024 qualifying group stage been beaten by anyone in past qualifications for the European Championship?
Euro 2020 Qualifying Top Scorer
England’s talisman, Harry Kane, finished top scorer of the Euro 2020 qualifying stage with 12 goals. England finished top of Group A, racking up seven wins and one defeat in their eight group games, scoring 37 goals. Kane finished the campaign with a hat-trick in England’s final qualifier when the Three Lions hammered Montenegro 7-0.
Euro 2016 Qualifying Top Scorer
Polish marksman Robert Lewandowski came the closest to Lukaku’s 14-goal haul by scoring 13 in the Euro 2016 qualifying stage. Poland reached Euro 2016 by finishing runner-up to Germany in Group D, narrowly missing out on topping the group by a single point.
Euro 2012 Qualifying Top Scorer
At the Euro 2012 qualification stages, Dutch target man Klaas-Jan Huntelaar finished as top scorer with 12 goals. The Netherlands topped Group E, winning nine of their ten group games, including a hefty 11-0 home win over San Marino. Huntelaar didn’t score in this game, making his 12-goal haul all the more impressive.
Euro 2008 Qualifying Top Scorer
There was a surprise top scorer during Euro 2008 qualifying, with Northern Ireland’s red-hot forward, David Healy, scoring 13 goals in 12 games. Northern Ireland only scored 17 goals in the campaign, demonstrating how important Healy was to their team.
