Charlton Athletic have endured a torrid season, free-falling down League One to find themselves just outside the relegation places. After four league defeats in their past five games, the Charlton board decided that enough was enough and relieved Michael Appleton of his first-team duties.
With only a few days of the January transfer window left, the board is keen to add to the seven signings that Charlton have already made this window to try and turn around the team’s fortunes.
Curtis Fleming has been placed in temporary charge of first-team affairs and will likely be in place until the end of the month. But who is in line to take over at the Valley? Let’s look at the next Charlton manager odds for the second half of the season.
Nathan Jones 1/2*
Nathan Jones is the current odds-on favourite to replace Michael Appleton in charge at the Valley. Though Jones has struggled recently at Southampton and Stoke City, the Welshman worked wonders with Luton Town in League One, which is one of the main reasons for their promotion to the English Premier League last season.
Though Jones is a fairly divisive character, he could be the talented motivator that the Addicks need to turn their season around. If Charlton can persuade Jones that the Valley is the perfect job for him to rebuild his career, he could lead the Addicks up the table and may even mount a late promotion push before the season is out.
Nigel Pearson 2/1*
Nigel Pearson is an experienced football manager, having been in charge of eight clubs during his 15+ career in the dugout. He enjoyed success at Leicester City and was most recently in charge of Bristol City, though he failed to live up to expectations at Ashton Gate.
During his first stint in charge of Leicester City, he won League One in 2009, so he knows what it takes to succeed in English football’s third tier. He’s an experienced head managed at the very top of the English game, and he would be a sound investment if Charlton can tempt him to the Valley.
Currently, he’s the second favourite for the job and is the man most likely to take the role if Nathan Jones passes up the opportunity.
Mark Bonner 4/1*
Mark Bonner is a talented young English manager who enjoyed remarkable success at Cambridge United when he was surprisingly given the job. He was responsible for Cambridge’s first promotion to League One since 2002, when he led the club up in 2020. He then masterminded an incredible 1-0 victory away to Newcastle United in the FA Cup third round, which went down as one of the club’s best-ever results.
Bonner has been out of work since his sacking at Cambridge in November 2023, when he was relieved of his duties after a poor run of form left the club in 18th in the table. If Bonner could replicate his success at Cambridge at the Valley, Charlton would have a talented and exciting young manager at the helm. His lack of experience may be the biggest stumbling block, but he’s certainly one on the shortlist.
Michael Duff 5/1*
Though Michael Duff had a hard time at Swansea City, his achievements at Barnsley and Cheltenham highlight that he’s clearly a good manager. Duff won League Two in charge of Cheltenham, taking the club into League One and securing their highest-ever finish in 2021-22, finishing 15th in the table.
He then did a brilliant job at Oakwell, taking Barnsley to the play-off final before narrowly losing to eventual winners Sheffield Wednesday. Duff has an excellent pedigree in League One and has shown that he can turn things around in a relatively short time. If Charlton fans can look past his recent spell in charge of Swansea, there’s no doubt that Duff could be a capable manager at the Valley.
Gareth Ainsworth 14/1*
An outside shout for the job at the Valley is the enigmatic Gareth Ainsworth. He worked wonders during his spell at Wycombe Wanderers, which prompted Queens Park Rangers to bring Ainsworth back to Loftus Road after he enjoyed a brilliant playing career with the Rs.
However, Ainsworth couldn’t get a tune out of QPR and was finally dismissed, with the club sitting in the Championship relegation zone. Ainsworth has openly said that he’s looking for a return to management, and the opportunity to take over at Charlton would surely appeal to him. 14/1, his appointment doesn’t look likely, but he’s one to watch if other managers pass up the opportunity for the position.
Other managers rumoured to be interesting to the Charlton board include Stephen Kenney, Scott Lindsey, Mark Warburton and John Eustace. Whoever takes the job has a lot of work on their hands to save Charlton’s season and to win back the fanbase.
