The club season might be heading into a crucial period, but you’d be forgiven for looking forward to Euro 2024.
This summer, 24 nations vie to become champions of Europe in Germany. Ten stadiums dotted across the country will stage the showpiece event as contenders look to take home the coveted Henri Delaunay Trophy.
Unsurprisingly, England are one of the favourites to lift the trophy on July 14th. Here, the talkSPORT BET blog looks at which players are staking a claim to make it to the tournament.
England Euro 2024 Squad Prediction
Barring fitness issues, we believe Gareth Southgate has his guys that can do him no wrong and fit his system perfectly. With that in mind, we look at who we think is on the plane, who is a probable selection, and those who probably need to do more to work their way into Southgate’s plans.
If you enjoy betting on football and want the latest Euro 2024 odds then knowing who will make the trip to Germany is important.
Who’s on the Plane?
Harry Kane is the first name on the team sheet. He’s the captain and the best player in the squad, backing that up with his relentless goalscoring form at Bayern Munich. There’s no discussion to be had about his place and role in the team.
Aside from him, Jude Bellingham is assured of making the final squad these days despite his young age. Few big-money transfers in modern history have paid off so quickly as the former Borussia Dortmund star’s move has; his start to life at Real Madrid has been nothing short of scintillating, fully justifying his fee.
Bukayo Saka has quietly gone about his business this season for Arsenal, scoring six goals and creating seven in the Premier League alone. Southgate put his faith in Saka early on and hasn’t been out of favour for the national team since then. For the crunch fixtures, we’re sure Saka will be lined up on the right flank.
Otherwise, you can expect Kyle Walker, Jordan Pickford, John Stones, Declan Rice, Phil Foden, and Harry Maguire. Even with a disastrous run of form, these players should still make Gareth’s squad.
Not Certain, But Probably
Ignore the mistakes he’s made over recent weeks for Newcastle; Kieran Trippier is a brilliant defender. The errors that have received column inches in recent months can be attributed to Newcastle’s injury crisis.
The main question mark remains over where Southgate views Trent Alexander-Arnold’s best position and how many right-backs he wants to include in his squad. Reece James has been injury-plagued and might struggle to be fit, so Trippier should join the Three Lions in Germany.
Southgate received plenty of criticism, at Wembley and further afield, for selecting Jordan Henderson despite playing in the Saudi Pro League. Many England fans felt his performances towards the end of his Liverpool career had tailed off and were left scratching their heads when he was still receiving caps despite playing for Al-Ettifaq.
Nevertheless, Southgate appears to like his dressing room experience and leadership, so he’ll probably make the squad after moving to Ajax, even if he doesn’t feature in the starting lineup.
It can be viewed as quite a conundrum for Kalvin Phillips whether he should’ve forced his move away from Manchester City or not this January because Southgate likes to select him even when he doesn’t play.
It’s true that he hardly puts a foot wrong for England, but could a bad run of form at West Ham, who he’s joined on loan, jeopardise his spot in the squad? It’s still unlikely he’ll miss out, but he is one to keep an eye on.
Other names we feel are likely to travel are Marc Guehi, Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford, and Aaron Ramsdale.
Left To Sweat Over Their Place
There’s no denying what a great season Jarrod Bowen has had so far. He’s proved for the Hammers what a key asset his attacking prowess is, both domestically and continentally. Regardless, he’s further down the pecking order because of the number of attacking players that are ahead of him.
Speaking of players who’ve shone for their clubs, Ollie Watkins has gone up a gear since Unai Emery took the Aston Villa job. He’s scored plenty and has teed up his teammates to fire Villa up the table.
However, he needs to maintain this form with Ivan Toney returning for Brentford, Eddie Nketiah getting a recent call-up, and Callum Wilson scoring whenever he’s fit. It’s somewhat a moot point because nobody is ousting Kane, but there’s competition for the deputy spot.
James Maddison’s early season form was inspiring under new boss Ange Postecoglou. He showed why they pushed the boat out to sign him.
However, the former Leicester man suffered a nasty injury and has been sidelined for some time. Considering he’ll need to get back to peak fitness before the tournament, Maddison has his work cut out to prove his worth.
Other names there are question marks over, for one reason or another, are Jack Grealish, Fikayo Tomori, Cole Palmer, Conor Gallagher, Nick Pope, and Lewis Dunk.
Potential Wildcards
Liverpool sit top of the league right now and Curtis Jones deserves a lot of credit for his contribution towards that. He’s matured tremendously this season, and there couldn’t be too many complaints if he’s included in the England squad for Euro 2024.
Dominic Solanke is another player who has done very well this season, and the Bournemouth man could be an asset to the Three Lions in Germany if he is picked. He’s proven for consecutive weeks that he can be relied on to find the back of the net and has dragged Bournemouth away from the danger zone.
Rangers’ goalkeeper Jack Butland has also shown incredible form in the SPL this season and has resurrected his career. Many see him as a better option than Sam Johnstone as England’s third-choice keeper, but Southgate may be reluctant to pick the Gers’ stopper as he doesn’t play in the EPL.
Finally, Rico Lewis is getting more and more minutes under Pep Guardiola, which speaks for itself. Whether it’s too soon for Southgate to integrate him into the squad remains to be seen, but he’s impressing on a more regular basis these days.
However, here’s a special shout-out to Morgan Gibbs-White, Anthony Gordon, James Ward-Prowse, and Ezri Konsa, who may just miss out despite the brilliant seasons they are all enjoying at club level.
