Coventry City v Sunderland Preview & Betting Options

Posted on March 12, 2025March 12, 2025 By Kane Forster

Date: Saturday 15th March 2025
Time: 15.00 GMT
Location: Coventry Building Society Arena, Coventry
Odds: Coventry City – 5/4* – Draw 23/10* – Sunderland 19/10*

Frank Lampard has rejuvenated Coventry City since taking charge at the end of last year. The former England international has has catapulted Coventry into the heart of the Championship playoff race and made them serious promotion contenders.

On the other hand, Sunderland let their early-season form slip and are no longer serious contenders for the automatic promotion places. Still, the Black Cats hope to secure a playoff berth for a shot at the Premier League.

With everything to play for in the Midlands, let’s preview Coventry City v Sunderland and explore your betting options at talkSPORT BET Sportsbook.

Coventry City v Sunderland Betting Tips

  • Coventry City are the English Championship’s most in-form team right now. The Sky Blues have won five on the bounce since their 2-0 home defeat to Leeds United at the start of February and are much fancied ahead of this one. We expect Coventry to beat Sunderland, but it will likely be a tight affair.
  • If you’re looking at Coventry City v Sunderland as a both teams to score pick, six of the last ten matches between the two have seen both teams find the net. This perhaps makes it a little close to call for the BTTS wager. A better option might be a totals bet. At least three goals have been scored in three of their last four meetings, so consider betting over 2.5.
  • Sunderland’s Eliezer Mayenda is a good option as a first or anytime scorer. The 19-year-old has been impressive since breaking into the first team, with nine league goals in ten appearances for the Black Cats. He also has three in his last two outings, so consider backing him to find the net against Coventry, given his excellent recent form.

This Fixture in History

Sunderland and Coventry City have only met 47 times since their first fixture in January 1930. Coventry have the better record, with 17 wins to Sunderland’s 12. There have been 18 draws.

Surprisingly, Sunderland haven’t beaten Coventry City since a 2-0 win in the Championship in 2007. The teams have met nine times since then in League One and the Championship. The Sky Blues have won four of these games, and there have been five draws.

Given Coventry’s excellent recent form under Lampard, we expect their unbeaten run against the Black Cats to continue this weekend.

Coventry City Man to Watch: Jack Rudoni

Jack Rudoni is establishing himself as a firm favourite among the Coventry City faithful, and he’s enjoying a productive season in City’s midfield. He has scored five goals, laid on ten assists, and is often at the heart of everything positive in Coventry’s attacking style.

Rudoni scored the opening goal in City’s crucial 3-2 win away at Oxford United last week and will be one of Coventry’s key players against Sunderland this weekend.

Sunderland Man to Watch: Wilson Isidor

We’ve already mentioned Mayenda as a goal threat, but Wilson Isidor has been Sunderland’s leading man this season, with 12 goals in 33 league appearances. After an impressive start to life in the North East on loan, Sunderland took up the option to buy the French forward in January, and he has picked up where he left off.

Supplied by Jobe Bellingham, Trai Hume, and Patrick Roberts, Isidor will have plenty of chances to find the net against Coventry and will be Sunderland’s main goal threat.
