Carabao Cup Final: Liverpool v Newcastle Preview & Betting Options

Posted on March 13, 2025March 18, 2025 By Kane Forster

Date: Sunday 16th March 2025
Time: 16.30 GMT
Location: Wembley Stadium, London
Odds (90 minutes): Liverpool 4/7* – Draw 14/5* – Newcastle United 7/2*

Newcastle United will be hoping to win their first major domestic honours since 1955 as they take on Carabao Cup holders Liverpool at Wembley Stadium this weekend.

The Magpies will compete in their second Carabao Cup final in three years as Eddie Howe is determined to end the club’s trophy hoodoo and bring silverware back to Tyneside.

But Liverpool go into this one as the favourites, despite a disappointing midweek defeat to Paris Saint Germain in the Champions League. The Reds won the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea last season and have been brilliant in the Premier League.

Liverpool v Newcastle United Betting Tips

  • Newcastle United have lost their last three domestic cup finals 2-0. They lost 2-0 to Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final in 2023. Manchester United beat them by the same score line in the 1999 FA Cup final, and Arsenal won 2-0 against the Magpies in the 1998 FA Cup final. So, if you’re looking for a correct score wager in this one, Liverpool to win 2-0 is a good shout.
  • Liverpool have won ten League (Carabao) Cups, the record in the competition’s history. Newcastle United have never won the competition. The Reds have also won three of the last four League Cup finals they competed in, with their only defeat coming to Manchester City in the 2016 final.
  • Liverpool have appeared in four domestic finals (three Carabao Cups and one FA Cup) at Wembley Stadium since 2016, and the Reds have only conceded one goal in these appearances. It will be a tall order for Newcastle United to beat Liverpool, but the Magpies will give everything they’ve got and may look to push the tie to extra time and penalties for their best chance of winning.

This Fixture in History

In their two Premier League clashes this season, Liverpool are unbeaten against Newcastle United. The teams played out a pulsating 3-3 draw at St James’ Park in December, but Liverpool eased to a 2-0 victory at Anfield in February.

Liverpool’s recent Premier League record against Newcastle speaks volumes about their dominance over the Magpies over the last ten years. Newcastle’s last Premier League victory against the Reds came almost ten years ago, with a 2-0 home victory against Liverpool in December 2015.

In other words, Liverpool are unbeaten in 17 domestic fixtures against Newcastle United, winning 12 and drawing five of these encounters.

These two rivals last met in the League Cup on January 7th, 1998, at St James’ Park. The quarter-final tie ended 0-0 after 90 minutes, but Liverpool secured a 2-0 win after extra time thanks to goals from Michael Owen and Robbie Fowler.

Liverpool Man to Watch: Mo Salah

Mo Salah was in tears as Liverpool exited the UEFA Champions League midweek, but he will look to have a smile on his face at the end of this weekend. The Egyptian has been lethal for Liverpool throughout this campaign, with 32 goals in 42 appearances in all competitions.

The Egyptian is Liverpool’s best player and biggest goal threat, and Eddie Howe must devise a plan to keep him quiet. He has previous against Newcastle this season, too, scoring two goals in the 3-3 draw at St James’ Park in 2024.

Newcastle United Man to Watch: Alexander Isak

There’s a chance that Alexander Isak could turn out in Liverpool red next season, but for now, he’s Newcastle United’s star man. The Sweden international has 22 goals in 32 outings this term, with two EFL Cup goals in his five appearances. He suffered a muscle injury when Newcastle met Liverpool last month but was at his brilliant best when he scored and laid on an assist in the 3-3 game between the teams earlier this season.

As Newcastle have failed to score in their past three domestic cup finals, Isak represents their best hope of finding the net at Wembley Stadium this weekend.
