Cardiff City v Bristol City Preview, Betting Options & Markets at talkSPORT BET

  • Odds: Cardiff City 13/8* – Draw 9/4* – Bristol City 6/4*

It’s the battle of the birds in the Severnside Derby this weekend, as the Bluebirds of Cardiff City take on the Robins of Bristol City in the Welsh capital.

There’s very little love lost between the two teams, and though neither team is enjoying the best of campaigns in the Championship, we can expect fireworks and a full crowd at the Cardiff City Stadium for this lunchtime kick-off.

So, join us as we preview Cardiff City v Bristol City in the Championship and learn how to bet on this fixture at talkSPORT BET Sportsbook.

Cardiff City v Bristol City Betting Tips

  • There’s normally a winner in the Severnside Derby. In fact, in the last 25 league meetings between the two teams, this fixture has only been drawn twice – one of these came in the 1-1 draw at Ashton Gate earlier this season. So, while there might not be a lot to separate the two teams, a draw looks unlikely going into this one.
  • Despite being at the wrong end of the Championship table, the Bluebirds have recently enjoyed the upper hand in this fixture. In fact, Cardiff have won three out of the last four meetings between the teams and have only conceded one goal to Bristol City. Cardiff have won the previous two league meetings at the Cardiff City Stadium 2-0, which might be a good bet again ahead of this one.
  • The Bluebirds were unbeaten in the Championship in January, but that disastrous 7-0 defeat at Elland Road to Leeds United got February off to the worst possible start. The Bluebirds lost again on February 11th to Portsmouth, so they will be looking to bounce back against a Bristol City side that hasn’t won a league game on the road since November 9th, when they won 2-0 at Carrow Road against Norwich. So, though we expect it to be tight, Cardiff to win could be a good bet, given that they’re slight underdogs going into this match.

This Fixture in History

Since their first meeting in January 1915, Cardiff City have met Bristol City 103 times in all competitions, with 93 of these meetings coming on league business. Bristol City have the better record against Cardiff City, winning 42 games against the Bluebirds. Cardiff, on the other hand, have beaten their rivals 39 times, while there have been 22 draws.

In more recent history, Cardiff have won three of the last four games against Bristol City in the league. However, before their 2-0 win at the Cardiff City Stadium in March 2023, they’d lost four of the last five games against the Robins, so this fixture really can go either way.

Neither side is in particularly great form ahead of this match. Cardiff have only won two of their last five matches, and Bristol City have only won one of their last five**.

Cardiff City Man to Watch: Callum Robinson

The Republic of Ireland international Callum Robinson provides Cardiff City’s most potent goal threat, and the center-forward has 11 goals in 25 Championship matches so far this campaign. He has 16 goals in 70 league appearances for the Bluebirds and is the focal point of their attack.

The likes of Rubin Colwill and Callum O’Dowda will look to lay on chances for Robinson, who is the pick of the Cardiff attackers to back as a first or anytime scorer in this match.

Bristol City Man to Watch: Max Bird

Former Derby County midfielder Max Bird has established himself as a first-team regular at Ashton Gate this season, appearing in each of City’s 31 league games this campaign. He has laid on six assists for his teammates and is a hard-working, creative threat from the centre of midfield.

He will look to provide chances in this game for Bristol City’s top scorer, Anis Mehmeti, and the ever-dangerous Nakhi Wells, who have nine and seven goals each so far this season, respectively.
