Paul Nicholls is a 62-year-old National Hunt horse trainer with close to 4,000 career wins from his yard of thoroughbreds. Read on to learn more about Nicholls’ journey to becoming one of his era’s finest National Hunt trainers and his likely net worth based on recent winnings and assets.
We also introduce some of Nicholls’ runners in the big National Hunt races in 2025 and explain how you can bet on these horses at talkSPORT BET.
How Much is Paul Nicholls Worth in 2025?
2024 was a tough year by Paul Nicholls’ high standards. Several of his horses struggled, and he admitted that it was “all part of the cycle” and reminded everyone that champion horses “don’t grow on trees”.
Nicholls only had one winner at Cheltenham in 2024, as Monmiral won the Pertemps Final in a race with a purse of £100,000. It was Nicholls’ 49th win at Cheltenham. With several runners at the festival in 2025, this will likely be a better year for the Nicholls’ stable, with Monmiral potentially going in the Stayers’ and Just A Rose among the contenders in the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle.
Still, Nicholls is currently in second place in the Jump Trainers’ Championship at the time of writing. He has 75 wins and 202 places this season, raking in £1,796,820 in prize money ahead of the Cheltenham Festival. He’s second in the standings and unlikely to catch his former assistant, Dan Skelton, who has enjoyed a brilliant season.
2023 was a much better year for Nicholls. In fact, he broke his earnings record for a jumps season, pocketing a total of £3,646,585 in prize money. In doing so, Nicholls finished the 2023 season crowned as the Champion Trainer for the 14th time.
In total, Nicholls landed 163 winners through the 2023 jumps season. He’s also alluded to the yard having a “nice production line” of more young prospects in the coming months, though this didn’t quite come to fruition. The previous year, Nicholls earned almost £3 million across jump and flat racing combined.
Looking at Nicholls’ returns from the last six years combined, he’s earned £15,104,400 across all jumps racing in the UK.
It’s said that the percentage of winnings to the jockey and trainer is approximately 10% each. This means that Nicholls will have generated around £1.51 million in prize money for his Paul Nicholls Racing Ltd firm during the last five years alone.
Combining this with the assets of his stables in Ditcheat, Somerset, it’s easy to understand why many believe Nicholls to be worth upwards of £5 million.
Exploring Paul Nicholls’ Horse Racing Career to Date
Before his time as a trainer, Nicholls was a handy jockey himself. During a seven-year career, he saddled no less than 133 winners before breaking his leg in pre-season training, culminating in his retirement.
After serving as an assistant trainer to David Barons in the late 1980s, Nicholls set out on his own path to become a trainer in his own right. Nicholls acquired Manor Farm in Ditcheat, Somerset, and the rest is history. After starting with a stable of just eight horses, it took Nicholls only two years to land his first grade one winner, with See More Indians taking the Feltham Novices’ Chase at Kempton.
Nicholls’ breakthrough year came in 1999 after landing three of the most prestigious races at the Cheltenham Festival. See More Business earned Nicholls his first Gold Cup win, while victories in the Arkle Chase and the Queen Mother Champion Chase also caused the sport to sit up and notice.
The hire of Ruby Walsh as his stable jockey in the early 2000s proved an inspired move, with the duo teaming up to land some huge wins in the Queen Mother Champion Chase and the King George VI Chase.
In 2020, Nicholls was awarded an OBE for his services to the British horse racing history – and he’s showing no signs of slowing up yet.
Paul Nicholls’ Most Successful Horses
With so many great winners to choose from Nicholls’ yard, we’ve decided to list the Nicholls-trained horses with the highest Timeform ratings achieved in their careers:
- Kauto Star (191)
This French-bred behemoth was comfortably Nicholls’ most successful horse to date. Famed for his stamina and flexibility, Kauto Star remains the only thoroughbred to achieve the top rating over two, two-and-a-half and three miles in the same race season. He won the Cheltenham Gold Cup twice and was a five-time King George VI Chase winner.
- See More Business (182)
This horse’s finest hour also came in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, winning the 1999 Gold Cup by a length to 66/1 underdog Go Ballistic.
- Azertyuiop (182)
This was another French-bred horse to make a huge mark in the British National Hunt scene. He won the Arkle at the 2003 Cheltenham Festival before bagging the Queen Mother Champion Chase 12 months later.
- Denman (181)
Denman’s battles with stablemate Kauto Star were some of the most fascinating battles in the 2000s. After missing out on the Gold Cup to Kauto Star, he eventually led from the front to win in 2008, much to the delight of racegoers.
- Master Minded (179)
Master Minded is a two-time winner of the Queen Mother Champion Chase (2008 and 2009). In doing so, he became the youngest horse to win the race aged just five. He was the world’s top-rated chaser at the close of the 2007/08 jumps season.
Paul Nicholls at Cheltenham Festival
Paul Nicholls is one of the most revered trainers by racegoers at the Cheltenham Festival. The Englishman has trained no fewer than 48 winners at the Festival, including three Cheltenham Gold Cup winners – one a two-time champion in Kauto Star.
The Queen Mother Champion Chase has always been an event in which the Nicholls yard has excelled. The stable has yielded six winners in this race between 1999 and 2020, with Politologue the most recent winner.
In the Stayers’ Hurdle, the Nicholls-trained Big Buck’s had an enduring love affair with this race, winning four successive years between 2009 and 2012. Big Buck’s retired in March 2014 as one of the finest staying hurdlers in the history of the sport.
Nicholls is planning entrants in the 2025 Cheltenham Festival, including Caldwell Potter, Ginny’s Destiny, Henri The Second, Il Ridoto, Jubilee Alpha, Just A Rose, Kabral Du Mathan, Kalif Du Berlais, Monmiral, No Drama This End, and Shearer.
We expect Nicholls to surpass the 50-winner milestone by the end of the 2025 Cheltenham Festival, and you can bet on all of his horses at talkSPORT BET Sportsbook.
