Middlesbrough v Plymouth Argyle Preview & Betting Options

Posted on April 18, 2025April 18, 2025 By Kane Forster

Date: Friday 18th April 2025
Time: 15.00 GMT
Location: Riverside Stadium, Middlesbrough
Odds: Middlesbrough 1/3* – Draw 19/5* – Plymouth Argyle 13/2*

Plymouth Argyle will make one of the longest journeys in the football league pyramid when they travel to the Riverside Stadium on Good Friday.

The Pilgrims are coming off the back of a huge win against title-chasing Sheffield United, and victory at the Riverside Stadium could move them off the foot of the Championship table. The home team, on the other hand, are looking to reignite their play-off push.

Join us as we preview Middlesbrough v Plymouth Argyle and discover your Championship football betting options at talkSPORT BET Sportsbook.

Middlesbrough v Plymouth Argyle Betting Tips

  • While form and the league standings favour Middlesbrough ahead of this, Plymouth won on their last two visits to the Riverside Stadium – 2-0 in February 2024 and 1-0 in October 2009. Can they make it three on the bounce? Back Plymouth to win this match at 13/2* as they look to boost their chances of Championship survival at the end of the campaign.
  • Plymouth have done their survival aspirations no harm at all with two exceptional recent home wins against Sheffield United and Norwich City. The Pilgrims have won two of their last five games, but their last win away from Home Park was at Portsmouth on March 12th. While they might not win this one, the draw looks well-priced, given that Middlesbrough have lost their two matches without scoring a goal.
  • Excluding a 0-0 draw against Watford, three goals have been scored in each of Plymouth’s last five fixtures. Moreover, given that two of the last three meetings between these two have ended in 3-3 goal fests, betting on over 2.5 or 3.5 goals in this one could be a good option.

This Fixture in History

Middlesbrough and Plymouth Argyle have only met 38 times in history. Their first meeting was a 2-2 draw in League Division Two in 1954. Overall, there have been 13 draws. Middlesbrough have the upper hand, winning 15 compared to Plymouth’s 10 victories.

In more recent times, the Pilgrims have a decent record against Middlesbrough. In fact, Middlesbrough have only beaten Plymouth once in their last five Championship meetings. This solitary victory was a 2-0 win at Home Park in April 2010.

Middlesbrough’s last home victory against Plymouth Argyle was in April 1992. They won 2-1 in a League Division Two clash at their former home, Ayresome Park. So, if Middlesbrough beat Plymouth this weekend, it will be their first win over the Pilgrims at the Riverside Stadium.

Middlesbrough Man to Watch: Finn Azaz

Irish midfielder Finn Azaz is Middlesbrough’s most creative player, with ten assists and ten goals this season. Though he doesn’t top his team’s scoring charts, he’s the heartbeat of Middlesbrough’s midfield and arguably their most important player.

He was named the Championship Player of the Month in November, and he has been capped seven times by Ireland since the start of last year. He’s been one of the shining lights of an up-and-down season for ‘Boro, and Azaz will be instrumental to their chances of securing a playoff spot at the end of the season.

Plymouth Argyle Man to Watch: Ryan Hardie

Ryan Hardie has established himself as Plymouth’s main man since arriving at the club in 2020. The former Rangers man has 62 goals in over 200 league appearances for the Pilgrims and has bagged nine this campaign.

It was Hardie’s penalty that knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup earlier this season, and he will likely make it into league double figures for Plymouth for the fourth consecutive season. After scoring late against Sheffield United last time out, Hardie will be confident of finding the net at the Riverside.
