Which Country Has the Most Euro Championship Wins?

Several countries have won the Euros over the years. Some nations have multiple wins, while others have lifted the trophy just once. The Soviet Union were a powerhouse footballing nation in the 1960s as shown on the Euro winners list, and they won the inaugural edition of the European Championship in France in 1960.

The Soviet Union reached the final four years later in Spain, narrowly losing out to the host nation. They were also finalists in 1972, falling to a 3-0 defeat to West Germany in Belgium. The Red Army made it to the last two again in 1988, with Netherlands winning 2-0 in the Munich final.

The Soviet Union were beaten in finals by both Germany and Spain, and those two nations are level at the top of the Euro winners list with three wins each. Spain’s first victory was against the Soviet Union in 1964. They won again in 2008 and successfully defended the crown four years later.

Germany’s first European Championship success came as West Germany in Belgium in 1972. The Germans followed that up with triumphs in Italy in 1980 and England at Euro 1996.

Italy and France both have two Euro Cup wins. Italy won the third edition on home turf in 1968. They had to wait until 2021 for the next triumph, beating England in the final at Wembley Stadium.

France’s two wins were closer together. The French won the 1984 version at home, seeing off Spain at the Parc des Princes. Their second victory came against Italy in 2000, with David Trezeguet scoring a famous Golden Goal for the Blues.

Six nations have won the Euros on one occasion. Those countries are the Soviet Union, the Czech Republic, Portugal, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Greece. Will we see a new name on the trophy in 2024? Keep checking the Euro sportsbook for the latest odds.

Which Countries Haven’t Won the Euros?

Several so-called ‘big’ nations have never had the privilege of lifting the coveted Henri Delaunay Trophy. Arguably, the biggest country to have never won a Euros is England.

The Three Lions were FIFA World Cup winners in 1966, but the European Cup has eluded them. They did manage to reach the final at Wembley in the 2020 edition, losing out to old nemesis Italy on penalties.

Having already qualified with flying colours, England are right at the top of the Euro betting odds market to win in 2024. Don’t forget to check out our Safer Gambling Portal for all the tools on how to stay in control of your betting.

Serbia have reached two finals but have never won the European Championship. As Yugoslavia, they were runners-up in the inaugural competition in 1960 and finished second in Italy eight years later.

Belgium have also been runners-up once, losing out to West Germany in the 1980 final. Germany and the Soviet Union have both lost three finals, which is currently the record.

Has England Ever Beat Italy in the European Championship?

After decades of trying, England finally reached a European Championship final at Euro 2020. With the final taking place at Wembley, the Three Lions looked destined to lift the trophy for the first time.

However, Italy had other ideas in London. Despite going a goal down early on, the Italians took the game to England and forced extra time. After a nail-biting extra 30 minutes, the final went to penalties. Against the odds, Italy prevailed, breaking English hearts with a 3-2 win in the shootout.

Before the final, the rivals met twice in European Championships, with Italy winning both. In 1980, the Italians beat England in the group stage. Marco Tardelli scored the only goal of the game in Turin.

They also squared off in 2012 in a knockout matchup in Kiev. Italy won that one too, beating the English 4-2 on penalties after a goalless draw in normal time.

England did manage to beat Italy on their way to qualifying for the 2024 competition. Looking at the live football odds, the Three Lions are the favourites to lift the trophy on German soil. Can England make history in 2024?
