Sheffield United v Portsmouth Preview, Betting Options & Markets at talkSPORT BET

Posted on February 5, 2025February 5, 2025 By Armin Kianmehr

Date: 8th February, 2025
Time: 15.00 GMT
Location: Bramall Lane, Sheffield
Odds: Sheffield United @ 9/20* – Draw @ 31/10* – Portsmouth @ 5/1*

Sheffield United will look to put right a bitterly disappointing and hugely unexpected home defeat against Hull City as they return to Bramall Lane to face Portsmouth, who are struggling at the wrong end of the Championship table.

If Chris Wilder’s Blades are to maintain their promotion charge, they will need to restore Bramall Lane to the fortress it was throughout the first half of the season.

Pompey, on the other hand, are in a relegation battle and have been on the end of some tough away defeats recently, including a 5-1 loss at the Hawthorns at the end of January.

So, join us as we look ahead to Sheffield United v Portsmouth and learn how you can bet on this match at talkSPORT BET.

Sheffield United v Portsmouth Betting Tips

  • Before their unexpected 3-0 Bramall Lane defeat to Hull City, Sheffield United had only lost at home once in the league this season. We expect them to bounce back against Portsmouth, who don’t travel particularly well, to secure all three points in front of their home fans.
  • Sheffield United and Portsmouth have only met 13 times this century. The Blades have beaten Pompey five times since 2000, while Pompey have come out on top on four occasions, illustrating that, in recent history, the teams are evenly matched. Though we expect United to win this, it might not be a completely one-sided affair, as evidenced in the 0-0 draw between the teams earlier this season at Fratton Park.
  • Pompey have struggled to score on their travels this season. In fact, in their past five away league matches, Portsmouth have only scored two goals. Backing Sheffield United to win to nil could be a decent wager here, given Portsmouth’s struggles to find the net on the road.

This Fixture in History

Since their first competitive meeting in 1927, Sheffield United and Portsmouth have met 77 times in the English Football League pyramid. In fact, they’ve met in every league, from the Premier League to the old Division Three (now League Two), highlighting the rollercoaster ride these two teams have been on over the years.

The Blades have the upper hand over Pompey, with 39 wins to Portsmouth’s 27. The teams have drawn eleven of the fixtures they have played since 1927.

In more recent history, in the last five matches between the two teams, there’s nothing to separate them, with each team winning twice and one draw.

The most recent meeting between Sheffield United and Portsmouth ended goalless at Fratton Park on September 28th, 2024.

Sheffield United Man to Watch: Callum O’Hare

Sheffield United have many creative players in their midfield, but Callum O’Hare is one of the Blades’ most exciting players and has proven his quality since his summer arrival from Coventry City.

In 29 Championship games for the Blades so far this season, O’Hare has assisted five goals and scored two himself. He will have much creative freedom as Pompey visits Bramall Lane, and they will have to devise a plan to keep the English playmaker quiet so that he can leave Sheffield with any points.

Portsmouth Man to Watch: Callum Lang

From one Callum to another, Callum Lang is the man to watch in the Portsmouth team. The former Wigan Athletic striker has had a fruitful time since his arrival at Fratton Park, with 14 goals in 35 league matches.

Ten of those goals have come this season, and his goals may fire Portsmouth to Championship survival. He will undoubtedly be Pompey’s main goal threat in this game.
