Sheffield United v Blackburn Rovers Preview & Betting Options

Posted on May 1, 2025May 1, 2025 By Armin Kianmehr
  • Date: Saturday 3rd May 2025
  • Time: 12.30 GMT
  • Location: Bramall Lane, Sheffield
  • Odds: Sheffield United 6/5* – Draw 23/10* – Blackburn Rovers 2/1*

Blackburn Rovers will travel to Bramall Lane knowing that a win could be enough to secure a play-off berth. Though they also need other results to go their way, Rovers are in fine form, winning their last four games to give themselves the best shot at promotion to the Premier League.

Sheffield United are disappointed to have missed out on automatic promotion, but they will fancy their chances in the play-offs. If Blackburn beat the Blades in this match, there’s a good chance the two teams will meet again in the play-off semi-finals.

So, join us as we preview Sheffield United v Blackburn Rovers in the English Championship and discover your betting options at talkSPORT BET Sportsbook.

Sheffield United v Blackburn Rovers Betting Tips

  • Rovers are the form team going into this one. They’ve won four of their last five games, while the Blades have lost three of their previous five. Given that United have nothing to play for and Blackburn must win to keep their play-off hopes alive, betting on a Rovers win could be a good option ahead of this crucial clash.
  • That said, Sheffield United have a good recent record against Blackburn, winning four of the last five meetings in all competitions. They’ve also won their previous five games against Blackburn at Bramall Lane. So, while the form says otherwise, recent history shows that United have the edge going into this one.
  • Historically, this fixture isn’t a good option for the both teams to score market. In fact, both teams have failed to score in the last four English Championship meetings between Sheffield United and Blackburn Rovers. So, if you’re planning a BTTS accumulator this weekend, back both Sheffield United and Blackburn Rovers not to score.

This Fixture in History

Sheffield United and Blackburn Rovers have met 155 times over the years, with their first clash dating back to January 1894. They’re remarkably evenly matched over the years. United have won 63 games, while Blackburn have won 56. There have been 36 draws.

More recently, the Blades have had the upper hand in this fixture. In their last ten meetings, the Blades have won seven and Blackburn have won three. There haven’t been any draws between the two in their previous ten clashes.

Perhaps worryingly for Blackburn’s play-off aspirations, Rovers haven’t won at Bramall Lane in any competition this century, and their only positive result in Sheffield was a 0-0 draw in the Premier League in September 2006.

Blackburn’s last win at Bramall Lane was in 1994, over 30 years ago. But thanks to Rovers’ excellent recent form and the fact that a playoff spot is on the line, this is their best chance of beating United at Bramall Lane, given that the home side has nothing to play for in their final Championship match.

Sheffield United Man to Watch: Gustavo Hamer

Recently crowned the Championship Player of the Season, Gustavo Hamer will be looking to drive his team forward as they prepare for the playoffs. The Dutch midfielder has been outstanding since arriving in Sheffield from Coventry City, and he’s bagged nine league goals and provided seven assists in this productive campaign.

United will do well to keep hold of Hamer in the summer, whether or not they’re promoted, with many Premier League clubs showing interest in the talented midfielder.

Blackburn Rovers Man to Watch: Todd Cantwell

Since arriving at Blackburn from Rangers, Todd Cantwell has found some of the form he showed at Norwich City a few years ago and has proven himself an accomplished Championship player. He tops the assists chart for Rovers going into the season’s final weekend, laying on seven goals.

Sure, he might spend too much time on TikTok, but when he’s on his game, he can pick a pass and create many chances for his teammates. If Rovers secure a playoff spot with a win in Sheffield, Cantwell must be at his best.

Yes, Blackburn can still win promotion via the playoffs. They begin the final day with 65 points and a +5 goal difference. They will secure a play-off berth if they can better Coventry City or Bristol City’s results.
