Henry de Bromhead Net Worth

Posted on February 13, 2024February 13, 2024 By Rachel Stuart

Horse racing is known as the so-called “Sport of Kings”, with horses and jockeys often taking centre stage and dominating the news.

However, trainers play a huge role in developing and fielding our most beloved runners, while a select few have achieved iconic status in the sport on the back of their incredible and sustained successes.

One such trainer is Henry de Bromhead, with the 50-year-old Irishman operating stables in his hometown of Knockeen, County Waterford. But is it possible to come up with a Henry de Bromhead net worth figure, and how has he managed to build his wealth through the years?

Who is Henry de Bromhead?

Henry de Bromhead was born on October 28th, 1972, in the Irish town of Knockeen, County Waterford. He began his career in horse racing as an amateur jockey, enjoying limited success before transitioning to become a professional horse trainer at the turn of the century.

He subsequently founded the now-famed Henry de Bromhead Racing Stables in 2003 before going on to train runners who have won some of the most prestigious races in the world.

We’ll explore this in more detail below, but his horses have won events such as the Cheltenham Gold Cup, Grand National and the Irish Champion Hurdle. The latter event also saw him win his maiden Grade 1 event as a trainer in 2008 when the legendary Sizing Europe prevailed in a highly competitive field.

He has continued to train winners in Ireland and the UK, with 2023 a typically stellar year for his stables.

Calculating Henry de Bromhead’s Net Worth

During de Bromhead’s superb career, he’s thought to have amassed a net worth of £10 million.

This wealth has been accumulated off the back of several champion runners, including the aforementioned Sizing Europe. This bay gelding won 17 of the 31 chase meetings he contested during his career, while he also placed third or better in a staggering 27 of these outings.

During an incredible career, Sizing Europe earned £1,136,274 alone, including £827,161 in winners’ cheques. In addition to his Irish Champions Hurdle win in 2008, this runner also claimed the 2010 Arkle Challenge Trophy and the Queen Mother Champion Chase in 2011 (two of 21 Cheltenham Festival wins achieved by de Bromhead overall).

Then there’s Honeysuckle, who continues competing as a 10-year-old mare and remains de Bromhead’s most successful horse. This runner has won a staggering 17 of her 19 steeplechase outings to date, while she’s never placed outside the top three during her career.

Her most famous wins have come at Cheltenham’s Champion Hurdle (2021 and 2022) and the Punchestown Champion Hurdle (also 2021 and 2022). She has also won two David Nicholson Mares’ Hurdle titles (most recently in 2023) and claimed a hattrick of Hatton’s Grace Hurdle crowns between 2019 and 2021.

Overall, Honeysuckle has earned £1,389,206 in winnings alone, while her cumulative career earnings have so far totalled £1,431,910.

Other iconic runners from the de Bromhead stable include Put The Kettle On, Minella Times, Minella Indo, A Plus Tard and Envoi Allen, the latter of which won the 2022 Ladbrokes Champion Chase.

Henry de Bromhead’s Career – In Numbers

In total, de Bromhead’s runners have amassed 8,263 starts between them. Interestingly, these have yielded 1,072 wins for the Irish trainer, who boasts an impressive win rate of 13% across the entirety of a career that has lasted for more than 20 years.

He has also earned 1,872 placed finishes (which may include runners who have finished second, third or fourth, depending on the size of the field in question). This means that 22.7% of his starting runners have placed, representing an incredible level of success over an extended period.

De Bromhead has also recorded 55 Grade 1 wins during his career, with 10 of these successes coming during a superb 2020/21 campaign. This season saw de Bromhead field 911 runners, who produced 140 victories at a win rate of 15.4%.

De Bromhead’s stable also produced 211 placed finishes in 2020/21, which translated into a success rate of 38.5% for the season.

Who else has played a key role in de Bromhead’s success?

Well, his horses have been ridden by a number of stellar jockeys down the years, with Jonathan Burke and David Mullins as two of his earlier collaborators. Andrew Lynch has also ridden 1203 of de Bromhead’s runners, earning 148 victories (a 12.3% win rate) and 286 places.

However, Rachael Blackmore has become synonymous with de Bromhead’s stable in recent years. Incredibly, she has ridden 1802 of the Irishman’s runners, earning 325 wins at a rate of 18%.

She has also claimed 495 places while riding de Bromhead’s horses. This means that she has placed 45.5% of the time while partnered with de Bromhead, which highlights the incredible consistency she has shown on the track.

Clearly, de Bromhead has built at least some of his success on a highly talented team and some of the sport’s most accomplished jockeys. So, he can attribute at least some of his £10 million net worth to the partnerships that he has developed through the years.

Is There More to Come from De Bromhead?

Despite his incredible career record and status as the first trainer to win the Champion Hurdle, Champion Chase and Gold Cup in the same year, de Bromhead remains active in the sport and retains a highly talented stable.

Honeysuckle is certainly still going strong and is likely to return to the Cheltenham Festival in March. Six-year-old ‘Inthepocket’ was also one of the star novice hurdlers of last season and a winner over a little over two miles in the G1 Poundland Top Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree last April.

He may also be fielded at the upcoming Turners Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham and looks a likely bet to increase de Bromhead’s haul of 21 wins at the Festival.

So, we’d expect de Bromhead to field more winners and increase his net worth in the months ahead as he continues to cement his status as one of the best-ever Irish trainers.
