Sean Bowen leads the way in the 2024/25 British Jump Jockeys’ Championship after making a fantastic start to the campaign.
The Welshman has 118 wins from 612 rides so far this campaign for a 19% strike rate, edging ahead of Harry Skelton as we look forward to the final few months of the campaign.
Bowen is bidding for a maiden British Jump Jockeys’ Championship. He recently had success at the highest level when he won the Grade One Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle on board Not So Sleepy. He also won on Strong Leader in the Liverpool Hurdle in 2024.
A first title this season would be a great reward for Bowen, who has been one of the leading Jump jockeys in the sport for several years. He rides regularly for his father, Sean Bowen, Olly Murphy, and Martin Keighley, and between them, they should continue to give him lots of opportunities to ride winners this season.
Who is the Current Champion of the Jump Jockeys?
Harry Cobden is the current British Jumps Jockey Champion after topping the Jump Jockeys’ table last season. It was his first-ever triumph and a hugely successful season for him, during which he rode 164 winners.
The 2023/24 season was hugely successful for Cobden. He won on Stay Away Fay in the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham and also with Stage Star in the Golden Miller Novices’ Chase.
Another 2023 triumph came with Captain Teague at the Challow Novices’ Hurdle at Newbury and Cobden also rode Pic D’Orhy to victory at the Melling Chase at Aintree. His biggest win in 2024 came on board Pic D’Orhy in the Ascot Chase.
Cobden displaced Brian Hughes as the champion in the 2023/24 season, who was looking for his fourth crown. Hughes collected his first title at the end of the 2019/20 campaign. He regained the trophy following the 2021/22 season, where he rode a career-high 204 winners, becoming only the fourth jockey in history to ride over 200 winners in a single season.
Which Jockey Has the Most Wins So Far This Year?
Sean Bowen is the man that all other jockeys will have to catch in the final months of the campaign. Bowen has 118 wins from his 612 rides so far this season and is only one of two jockeys to have surpassed the 100-win mark.
Moreover, Bowen has already earned over £1,200,000 in prize money this season, and he will likely add to his winnings when he participates in the Cheltenham Festival before the end of this season.
Harry Skelton is in second place in this year’s standings and is the only other jockey with over 100 wins – 110 from 454 rides, to be precise.
His 24% strike rate is much better than Bowen’s (19%), and he has amassed more prize money than the man at the top of the pile, with over £1,500,000 in earnings so far.
Current champion Harry Cobden would have been hoping for a better horse racing campaign, as he sits in fourth place with 65 wins from 308 races.
He’s just behind Sam Twiston-Davies, who has 78 wins from 420 rides. Recent champion Brian Hughes is further down the pecking order in seventh place with 50 winners from 448 rides.
