Exploring the Many Faces of Poker: A Guide to Popular Variations

Posted on November 10, 2023 By Rachel Stuart

Ever since its inception, poker has evolved, branching out into numerous variations, each with its unique set of rules and strategies. From the glitz of televised Texas Hold’em tournaments to the old-school charm of Five-Card Draw, there’s a poker game for every type of player.

This guide delves into the various forms of poker, shedding light on what makes each one unique. Many of the games we’ll go on to mention can be found in our poker section, although we’ll also cover some that aren’t. Before we jump into them though, it’s good to get a bit of context about how this game started.

History of Poker: The Evolution of a Timeless Game

Poker, with its mix of strategy and chance, has deep historical roots that span continents and centuries. Its beginnings are somewhat debated, with some historians tracing its ancestry to ancient China, while others see its lineage in the Persian game As Nas, or Europe’s Primero and Poque.

It’s widely accepted that poker as we know it began to take shape in 17th-century Europe before being brought to North America by French colonists. Here, in the burgeoning settlements along the Mississippi River and during the American Civil War, the game matured.

The 20th century heralded a golden age for poker. The establishment of Las Vegas as the world’s gambling capital and the launch of tournaments like the World Series of Poker (WSOP) propelled it onto a global stage.

The digital revolution in the late 20th and early 21st centuries further amplified its reach, with online platforms introducing the game to a new generation. Today, from glitzy casinos to online platforms and home games, poker’s legacy as a game of skill, strategy, and serendipity continues to thrive.

The Different Variations of Poker

Poker comes in many forms, from the types you may be familiar with playing around a table with friends, to those you can play with just you and a dealer in our live casino section. Here are just a few of the different poker variations you can play:

Draw Poker

Draw poker represents a family of poker games where players are dealt a complete hand, hidden from their opponents. Players can discard some or all of their cards, replacing them with new ones. This draw aims to improve the hand. The game continues with betting, and the best hand at the end takes the pot.

Stud Poker

Stud poker games involve players receiving cards that are dealt in a combination of face-down and face-up rounds, called streets. Each game has a specific number of streets, with a betting round after each. There’s no draw in Stud poker; players use the cards they are dealt.

Community Card Poker

Community card poker games, also known as flop games, have a unique feature: shared cards placed face-up in the centre of the table. These community cards are available to all players to combine with their hole cards to form the best possible five-card hand.

The two most popular variations of this form of poker are Texas Hold’em and Omaha. Texas Hold’em is arguably the most popular form of poker globally, players are dealt two private cards, with five community cards placed face-up. Players use the best combination of five cards to form a winning hand.

Video Poker

An electronic adaptation of the classic poker game. It combines the strategy of poker with the luck of slot machines. In most variants, the player is dealt five cards and must decide which to hold and which to discard, aiming to form the highest-ranking hand possible.

Poker Games with a Global Twist

Many ancient card games that paved the way for modern poker are still played today, often reflecting their rich regional histories. Andar Bahar, originating from India, is a game of pure chance. A single card is dealt face up in the middle, and players bet on which side, Andar (inside) or Bahar (outside), a card with the same face value will appear.

Teen Patti, also known as Indian Poker, is played with three cards. Players bet based on the strength of their cards or their bluffing skills, and the best three-card hand wins. The ranking of the hands is similar to traditional poker, with three of a kind (called a ‘trail’) being the highest.

Selecting the Right Poker Variation for You

Poker, in its many variations, caters to a broad spectrum of players, each with different skill sets and preferences. When choosing the right game for you, consider the following:

Skill Level

If you’re a beginner, starting with simpler games like Andar Bahar or Teen Patti can be beneficial. They offer straightforward rules, allowing you to get a feel for card games. On the other hand, games like Texas Hold’em require more strategy and understanding of poker hand rankings.

Play Duration

Some games, like 3 Card Brag, can be quicker, while traditional poker games might extend for longer durations. Your choice might differ based on whether you want a quick game or an extended session.

Personal Enjoyment

At the end of the day, the best game is the one you enjoy the most. Try out different variations, understand their nuances, and stick to the ones that bring you the most enjoyment. But also remember to play responsibly. For information on how you can do this, check out our Safer Gambling Portal.
